Fast pH‐Driven Solubilization Method of Realgar (As4S4) to Reduce the Toxicity of Arsenic [As(III)] for Medicinal Purposes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Arsenic trioxide transformed acute promyelocytic leukemia therapy and shows promise against HIV. A new method to solubilize the mineral realgar produces different arsenic species depleting the main arsenic target, nuclear PML protein, and retaining effects on leukemic and HIV reservoir cells, while minimizing off‐target damage.

Single‐Cell RNA Sequencing Identifies MMP11+ Cancer‐Associated Fibroblasts as Drivers of Angiogenesis and Bladder Cancer Progression

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Single‐cell RNA sequencing identifies MMP11⁺ CAFs as pro‐angiogenic cells accumulating during bladder cancer progression. These cells promote angiogenesis by regulating ESM1⁺ tip endothelial cells and recruiting SPP1⁺ macrophages. Tumor‐derived BMP2 promotes their activation.

Evolution of sequence-specific anti-silencing systems in Arabidopsis

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Eukaryotes often silence transposable elements (TEs) via DNA methylation. Here, the authors show that evolution of VANC, an Arabidopsis anti-silencing factor, and its target motifs allows sequence-specific demethylation, suggesting a way TEs can ...

Structural Variations Associated with Adaptation and Coat Color in Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau Cattle

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study reveals the landscape of structural variants in Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau cattle through long‐read sequencing. Discoveries include metabolic and oxygen‐regulation gene variants, along with a 2‐Mb KIT‐containing inversion and translocations responsible for cattle gray coat. These findings highlight the significant role of structural variants in

The latent cis-regulatory potential of mobile DNA in Escherichia coli

open access: yesNature Communications
Transposable elements can alter gene regulation in their host genome, either when they integrate into a genome, or when they accrue mutations after integration.

CD103+ T Cells Eliminate Damaged Alveolar Epithelial Type II Cells Under Oxidative Stress to Prevent Lung Tumorigenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work unravels a novel function of CD103+ T cells in eradicating oxidative‐stressed somatic cells to prevent lung tumorigenesis and identifies specific CD103+ T cell‐decline as a key feature in the aged lung. This comprehensive study highlights the contribution of immuno‐dysregulation to the high incidence of aging‐associated lung cancers ...

A Two‐Component Pseudo‐Icosahedral Protein Nanocompartment with Variable Shell Composition and Irregular Tiling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The structure and assembly principles of a two‐component encapsulin nanocompartment shell are reported. The two‐component protein compartment self‐assembles from two distinct HK97‐fold shell proteins into a pseudo‐icosahedral protein shell with variable composition and irregular tiling.

Role of Retroelements in Frontotemporal Dementia Development

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioscience-Scholar
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) develops in proteinopathies involving TDP-43 (transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 kDa), tau, and FUS (fused in sarcoma) proteins, which possess antiviral properties and exert inhibitory effects on human transposable ...
