Natural competence is the term used to describe the uptake of “naked” extracellular DNA by bacteria; it plays a significant role in horizontal genetic exchange. It is associated with type IV pili, and specialized competence pili mediate DNA uptake. Here,

Cellular Ingestible DNA Nanostructures for Biomedical Applications
Delivering functional substances across the cell membrane barriers has been a great challenge in biomedicine. Among various strategies to improve cellular uptake, DNA nanostructures, with different shapes and sizes, supply as suitable platforms for ...

Natural competency requires uptake of exogenous DNA from the environment and the integration of that DNA into recipient bacteria can be used for DNA-repair or genetic diversification.

RpoS regulates a novel type of plasmid DNA transfer in Escherichia coli. [PDF]
Spontaneous plasmid transformation of Escherichia coli is independent of the DNA uptake machinery for single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) entry. The one-hit kinetic pattern of plasmid transformation indicates that double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) enters E. coli cells

DNA Binding and Uptake by Nuclei Isolated from Plant Protoplasts [PDF]
DNA binding and uptake by nuclei isolated from soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) protoplasts were investigated using radioactive homogeneous DNA prepared from soybean cells. DNA binding to nuclei was found to decrease drastically with increased incubation time.

Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Metal complexes as DNA intercalators [PDF]
DNA has a strong affinity for many heterocyclic aromatic dyes, such as acridine and its derivatives. Lerman in 1961 first proposed intercalation as the source of this affinity, and this mode of DNA binding has since attracted considerable research ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...
