Earthworm symbiont Verminephrobacter eiseniae mediates natural transformation within the host egg capsules using type IV pili

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2014
The dense microbial communities commonly associated with plants and animals should offer many opportunities for horizontal gene transfer (HGT) through described mechanisms of DNA exchange including natural transformation.

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

A comparative study of cationic formulations for the delivery of siRNA and DNA [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
RNA interference (RNAi) provides a specific and efficient way to silence gene expression; therefore, it is an attractive tool to be used in basic research on gene function as well as gene therapy.

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Mitochondrial DNA mutations affect calcium handling in differentiated neurons. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Contains fulltext : 88975.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access)Mutations in the mitochondrial genome are associated with a wide range of neurological symptoms, but many aspects of the basic neuronal pathology are not understood ...

Mobility of extracellular DNA within gonococcal colonies

open access: yesBiofilm, 2022
Transformation enables bacteria to acquire genetic information from extracellular DNA (eDNA). Close proximity between bacteria in colonies and biofilms may inhibit escape of eDNA from the colony but it also hinders its diffusion between donor and ...

Kinetics and mechanism of DNA uptake into the cell nucleus [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2001
Gene transfer to eukaryotic cells requires the uptake of exogenous DNA into the cell nucleus. Except during mitosis, molecular access to the nuclear interior is limited to passage through the nuclear pores. Here we demonstrate the nuclear uptake of extended linear DNA molecules by a combination of fluorescence microscopy and single-

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

A DNA vaccine construct incorporating intercellular trafficking and intracellular targeting motifs effectively primes and induces memory B and T cell responses in outbred animals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We developed a vaccine construct in which a BVP22 domain and an invariant-chain major histocompatibility complex class II-targeting motif capable of enhancing dendritic cell antigen uptake and presentation were fused to a sequence encoding a B- and T ...
