Effects of chronic browsing on life‐history traits of an irruptive large herbivore population

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study aimed to determine the relationship between diet quality, body mass, and size (hind foot length), and female reproduction and sought to identify the mechanism by which high density under severe food limitations is maintained. Our results demonstrated that sika deer introduced to Nakanoshima Island have maintained high densities through high ...

Power–Pitch Cascade Control-Based Approach for the Up/Down-Regulated Operation of Large Wind Turbines

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Modern energy needs require controlled and clean power generation. This demands that the wind turbines be integrated into joint generation groups (wind farms) and the power supply passes be managed by the grid.

miR-195 targeting MYB activates the PI3K-Akt pathway to regulate the proliferation and malignant metastasis of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin

open access: yesPifu-xingbing zhenliaoxue zazhi, 2020
Objective: To investigate the effect and mechanism of miR-195 on the proliferation and malignant metastasis of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. Methods: The expressions of miR-195 and MYB gene in the epidermoid carcinoma cell line (A431 cells) and ...

Combining transient dynamics and logistic‐asymptotic growth to study the recovery of two seabird populations after rat eradication

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examines the demographic dynamics of two seabird populations on Tromelin Island, 15 years after the eradication of brown rats. The results indicate that these populations are in good health and are expected to continue growing until breeding sites are saturated in about a century.

Down-regulation of Survivin enhances sensitivity to BPR0L075 in human cancer cells via caspase-independent mechanisms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Background: BPR0L075 [6-methoxy-3-(3',4',5'-trimethoxy-benzoyl)-1H-indole] is a novel anti-cancer compound. It inhibits tubulin polymerization and induces mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis in various human cancer cells with different multi-

Activation of endocytosis as an adaptation to the mammalian host by trypanosomes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Immune evasion in African trypanosomes is principally mediated by antigenic variation, but rapid internalization of surface-bound immune factors may contribute to survival.

Transcribed ultraconserved noncoding RNAs (T-UCR) are involved in Barrett's esophagus carcinogenesis. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Barretts esophagus (BE) involves a metaplastic replacement of native esophageal squamous epithelium (Sq) by columnar-intestinalized mucosa, and it is the main risk factor for Barrett-related adenocarcinoma (BAc).

Down-regulation of CD46 by Piliated Neisseria gonorrhoeae [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Experimental Medicine, 2003
Human membrane cofactor protein (CD46) protects host cells against complement attack and may function as a receptor for pathogenic Neisseriae. We assessed CD46 expression in the human cervical cell line ME-180 after exposure to Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

The unpredictably eruptive dynamics of spruce budworm populations in eastern Canada

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
We examine historical population data for spruce budworm from several locations through the period 1930–1997, and use density‐dependent recruitment curves to test whether the pattern of population growth over time is more consistent with Royama's (1984; Ecological Monographs 54:429–462) linear R(t) model of harmonic oscillation at Green River New ...
