Pulverizing medication as a harm reduction and intentional drug overdose prevention strategy: Two case studies

open access: yesNeuropsychopharmacology Reports, 2021
Aims We explored the use of pulverized medication as a new method to prevent intentional drug overdose. Methods This case study presents data obtained from the medical records of two female patients, aged 19 and 27 years, who presented with schizophrenia

Moral Hazards and Negative Externalities of Lifesaving Programs: How Naloxone Access Laws and Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs Affect HIV Transmission [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
This paper looks at naloxone access laws and prescription drug monitering programs and see how these programs affect HIV transmission and drug overdose deaths. Using an OLS regression I find that NAL reduces HIV and increases overdose deaths. I also find

Drug involvement in fatal overdoses

open access: yesSSM - Population Health, 2017
Death certificate data from the Multiple Cause of Death (MCOD) files were analyzed to better understand the drug categories most responsible for the increase in fatal overdoses occurring between 1999 and 2014. Statistical adjustment methods were used to account for the understatement in reported drug involvement occurring because death certificates ...

Eosinophils‐Induced Lumican Secretion by Synovial Fibroblasts Alleviates Cartilage Degradation via the TGF‐β Pathway Mediated by Anxa1 Binding

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Eosinophils play a crucial role in the progression of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA). This study demonstrates that eosinophils, induced by OVA/IL‐5, promote Lumican secretion in the synovium, which binds to Annexin A1 in chondrocytes, inhibiting transforming growth factor β2 and Smad2/3 phosphorylation.

Machine Learning for Drug Overdose Surveillance [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
We describe two recently proposed machine learning approaches for discovering emerging trends in fatal accidental drug overdoses. The Gaussian Process Subset Scan enables early detection of emerging patterns in spatio-temporal data, accounting for both the non-iid nature of the data and the fact that detecting subtle patterns requires integration of ...

The Lung Microbiome Modulates Pain‐Like Behavior Via the Lung–Brain Axis in a Nitroglycerin‐Induced Chronic Migraine Mouse Model

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Intratracheal neomycin alters pulmonary microbiota, activating the vagus nerve via lung brain‐derived neurotrophic factor/tropomyosin receptor kinase B (BDNF/TrkB) pathway, further projecting to nucleus of solitary tract (NTS), then dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), where activated serotoninergic neurons increase brain serotonin, alleviating migraine.

Using prescribing and toxicology data to determine non-medical prescription drug overdose

open access: yesAddictive Behaviors Reports, 2020
Background: Overdose deaths have increased dramatically in the United States and are often attributed to prescription opioids. This study presents a framework for “overdose typologies”, including non-medical prescription drug use, to more accurately ...

More powerful selective inference for the graph fused lasso [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
The graph fused lasso -- which includes as a special case the one-dimensional fused lasso -- is widely used to reconstruct signals that are piecewise constant on a graph, meaning that nodes connected by an edge tend to have identical values. We consider testing for a difference in the means of two connected components estimated using the graph fused ...
