Pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic integration of shikimic acid in broilers: An indirect effect modeling approach

open access: yesPoultry Science
Shikimic acid (SA), a natural polyhydroxy cyclic organic acid, possesses significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities; however, its pharmacokinetic (PK) profile and pharmacodynamic (PD) relationship in poultry remain poorly characterized ...

Transcriptional response to the host cell environment of a multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis clonal outbreak Beijing strain reveals its pathogenic features

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Tuberculosis is a global public health problem with emergence of multidrug-resistant infections. Previous epidemiological studies of tuberculosis in Thailand have identified a clonal outbreak multidrug-resistant strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in ...

Pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic relationship of a novel pleuromutilin derivative APTM against Mycoplasma gallisepticum

open access: yesPoultry Science
Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) is a primary avian pathogen that causes chronic respiratory disease, leading to significant economic losses in the poultry industry. This study aimed to investigate the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) relationship of

Advancing Antimicrobial Resistance Research Through Quantitative Modeling and Synthetic Biology

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2020
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an emerging global health crisis that is undermining advances in modern medicine and, if unmitigated, threatens to kill 10 million people per year worldwide by 2050.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Prevalence of Extended-Spectrum β-lactamase and Integron Gene Carriage in Multidrug-Resistant Klebsiella Species Isolated from Outpatients in Yazd, Iran [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Medical Sciences, 2020
Background: Community-acquired infections by multidrug-resistant (MDR), extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing Klebsiella species (Klebsiella spp.) is of major concern worldwide. Antibiotic resistance, production of extended-spectrum β-lactamases

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Lipopolysaccharide uptake is augmented in lipopolysaccharide‐tolerant mouse macrophage‐like cells via increased CD14 expression

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In normal (nontolerant) cells, CD14 is crucial for both LPS uptake and LPS signaling. In LPS‐tolerant cells, in which LPS‐induced TNF‐α and IFN‐β production is suppressed, there is a dramatic increase in surface CD14 expression. The overexpressed CD14 in LPS‐tolerant cells is responsible for the enhanced LPS uptake without inducing pro‐inflammatory ...

Effectiveness of Adherence to Procalcitonin-Guided Antibiotic Protocol in Patients with Severe Sepsis

open access: yesPakistan Journal of Medicine and Dentistry
Background: The misuse of antibiotic therapies in hospitalized sepsis patients increases hospital length of stay and antimicrobial resistance. Procalcitonin (PCT) is a bacterial infection biomarker that can guide doctors in their decisions about ...
