Identification of hydroxyapatite spherules provides new insight into subretinal pigment epithelial deposit formation in the aging eye. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Accumulation of protein- and lipid-containing deposits external to the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is common in the aging eye, and has long been viewed as the hallmark of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Pathogenesis of Drusen in the Primate

open access: yesRetina, 1986
Two monkey eyes that showed clinical evidence of drusen were studied by light and electron microscopy. The drusen-like spots had several different morphological patterns: the appearance of typical drusen, budding retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, and vacuolation of retinal pigment epithelial cells. Several stages of budding were seen.

Developing an image-based grading scale for peripheral drusen to investigate associations of peripheral drusen type with age-related macular degeneration

open access: yesScientific Reports
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness. It is associated with peripheral drusen which has not been categorized. We investigated peripheral drusen to validate an image grading system and to understand possible associations ...

Genetic Susceptibility, Diet Quality, and Two-Step Progression in Drusen Size

open access: yesInvestigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, 2020
Purpose To investigate the relationship of growth in drusen size with genetic susceptibility and adherence to the alternate Mediterranean diet. Methods Participants in this analysis had complete ocular, genetic, and dietary data with mean follow-up time ...

Epithelial phenotype restoring drugs suppress macular degeneration phenotypes in an iPSC model

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Age-related macular degeneration is characterized by lipid-rich drusen deposits underneath the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Here the authors report an in vitro iPSC-RPE model for AMD that recapitulates drusen and RPE atrophy, and identify two drugs ...

Automatic Drusen Segmentation for Age-Related Macular Degeneration in Fundus Images Using Deep Learning

open access: yesElectronics, 2020
Drusen are the main aspect of detecting age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Ophthalmologists can evaluate the condition of AMD based on drusen in fundus images. However, in the early stage of AMD, the drusen areas are usually small and vague.

Cell Calcification Models and Their Implications for Medicine and Biomaterial Research

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Calcification, is the process by which the tissues containing minerals are formed, occurring during normal physiological processes, or in pathological conditions. Here, it is aimed to give a comprehensive overview of the range of cell models available, and the approaches taken by these models, highlighting when and how methodological divergences arise,

Long-term Evolution and Remodeling of Soft Drusen in Rhesus Macaques

open access: yesInvestigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, 2020
Purpose To characterize the evolution and structure of soft drusen in aged rhesus macaques using in vivo multimodal retinal imaging and ex vivo histologic and ultrastructural analyses as a nonhuman primate model of early age-related macular degeneration (

Dietary fatty acids and lipoproteins on progression of age-related macular degeneration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a medical condition of central loss vision and blindness. Numerous studies have revealed that changes on certain dietary fatty acids (FAs) could have useful for AMD management.
