Esterification enhances carotenoid retention during bread‐making

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Volume 106, Issue 7, Page 4312-4319, May 2026.
Abstract BACKGROUND Carotenoids are plant‐derived antioxidants that contribute to human health and represent key quality traits in wheat‐based foods. However, they are highly unstable and prone to degradation during processing. Xanthophyll esterification has been identified as a natural mechanism that enhances carotenoid stability during grain storage.

Influence of interstitial carbon dioxide on deoxynivalenol accumulation in stored wheat under varying Fusarium treatments and airtight storage conditions

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Volume 106, Issue 7, Page 4394-4405, May 2026.
Abstract BACKGROUND Temperature and moisture content are recognized as the main factors responsible for mycotoxin production in stored grain, while the role of gaseous environment, particularly interstitial CO2, remains unexplored. This study investigated the relationship between interstitial CO2 concentration (generated metabolically in air spaces ...

1999 OUTLOOK OF THE U.S. AND WORLD WHEAT INDUSTRIES, 1998-2008 [PDF]

open access: yes
This report evaluates the U.S. and world wheat markets for the 1998-2008 period by using the World Wheat Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, the weather, and

Evaluation of antifungal and antimycotoxigenic activity of selected natural antioxidants against Fusarium culmorum: in vitro and in planta assays

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Volume 106, Issue 7, Page 4417-4425, May 2026.
Abstract BACKGROUND Fusarium culmorum causes Fusarium head blight (FHB) in cereals, leading to significant yield losses and contamination with type B trichothecene mycotoxins such as deoxynivalenol (DON) and its acetylated derivatives 3‐ADON and 15‐ADON.

SUBSTITUTION BETWEEN U.S. AND CANADIAN WHEAT BY CLASS [PDF]

open access: yes
The importation of hard red winter and durum wheat from Canada has been a source of contention among U.S. wheat growers, due to the likeness between domestic and imported Canadian wheat. It has also been investigated as a source of material injury to the

Spike productivity in relation to yield as criterion for emmer wheat breeding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Landraces, which are unbred cereal species, and include in particular the tetraploid emmer wheat, have become an important focus for the activities of local or organic farmers, processors and consumers of organic products. This study is based on analyses

Effect of Plasma‐Treated Water Spray on Seed Germination Rate

open access: yesPlasma Processes and Polymers, Volume 23, Issue 5, May 2026.
Plasma Treated Spray (PTS) is a scalable, energy‐efficient, and eco‐friendly technology designed to treat seeds of varying shapes and sizes, such as wheat, barley, onion, peas, and beetroot. This study demonstrates that PTS significantly enhances germination vigor, especially during the early stages, in wheat, barley, and pea seeds.

Wheat breeding approaches for designing wheat to thrive in a warmer world

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 3, Page 754-763, May 2026.
Wheat is a vital food crop, accounting for approximately 20% of daily calories and protein consumed worldwide. However, modern‐day wheat is under pressure from global change. The improvement rate of wheat yields is not keeping up with the demand of our growing population. Furthermore, abiotic and biotic stressors are becoming more prevalent. This paper

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal inoculation increases the bioavailability of zinc and iron in wheat grain

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 3, Page 924-936, May 2026.
Bread wheat is an important crop that supplies calories and nutrients to the global population. Enhancing the concentrations and bioavailability of essential micronutrients in wheat is crucial for human nutrition, and we investigated whether arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can contribute to the biofortification of wheat.
