The Magnetopause Boundary [PDF]

open access: yes
In this activity students explore in a quantitative way, how the distance to the bowshock balance point depends on the solar wind pressure acting on the Earth's magnetic field.

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

A role for subducting clays in the water transportation into the Earth’s lower mantle

open access: yesNature Communications
Subducting sedimentary layer typically contains water and hydrated clay minerals. The stability of clay minerals under such hydrous subduction environment would therefore constraint the lithology and physical properties of the subducting slab interface ...

Real-Time Dynamic Earth-Pressure Regulation Model for Shield Tunneling by Integrating GRU Deep Learning Method With GA Optimization

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
This paper proposes an intelligent framework to predict and automatically regulate earth pressure using a deep learning technique during earth pressure balance shield tunneling. A prediction model was proposed by integrating a new cost function (relative

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

The Space Environment and Atmospheric Joule Heating of the Habitable Zone Exoplanet TOI700-d

open access: yes, 2020
We investigate the space environment conditions near the Earth-size planet TOI~700~d using a set of numerical models for the stellar corona and wind, the planetary magnetosphere, and the planetary ionosphere.

Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...

Active State Earth Pressure based on Dubrova’s Method of Redistribution of Pressure

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Structural Engineering, 2018
Modes and magnitude of wall movement have great influence on the distribution of earth pressure behind retaining wall. For gravity retaining wall exerted by cohesionless soil rotating outward about the base, based on Dubrova’s method of redistribution ...

Re‐Awakening Public Attention to the Silent Pandemic of Cancer Among Older Adults in Low‐ and Middle‐Income Countries

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As global populations age, cancer is increasingly becoming a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults, particularly in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). Despite accounting for the majority of new cancer cases and deaths, older individuals remain underrepresented in cancer research, clinical guidelines, and health ...
