Role of Broad-Complex (Br) and Krüppel homolog 1 (Kr-h1) in the Ovary Development of Nilaparvata lugens

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2017
Ovarian development plays an important role in the life history of insects and is crucial for control of the insect population. The metamorphosis of an insect is precisely regulated by the interaction of the juvenile hormone and ecdysone.

A Set of Novel Venom Proteins Enables Parasitoid Wasps to Exploit Older Hosts and Coexist with Competitors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 4, 19 January 2026.
This study elucidates a molecular mechanism enabling species coexistence between parasitoid wasps, showing how Asobara japonica uses a set of novel venom proteins to delay host development and exploit older hosts, thereby achieving temporal niche partitioning with Leptopilina drosophilae. Abstract Interspecific competition can drive species coexistence

Transcriptional control of steroid biosynthesis genes in the Drosophila prothoracic gland by ventral veins lacking and knirps. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2014
Specialized endocrine cells produce and release steroid hormones that govern development, metabolism and reproduction. In order to synthesize steroids, all the genes in the biosynthetic pathway must be coordinately turned on in steroidogenic cells.

Function and Evolution of Nuclear Receptors in Environmental-Dependent Postembryonic Development

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2021
Nuclear receptors (NRs) fulfill key roles in the coordination of postembryonal developmental transitions in animal species. They control the metamorphosis and sexual maturation in virtually all animals and by that the two main environmental-dependent ...

Spatiotemporal Crosstalk Between Oocyte and the Microenvironment Governs Preovulatory Follicle Aging

open access: yesAging Cell, Volume 25, Issue 1, January 2026.
Preovulatory follicle aging is characterized by two distinct phases—early oocyte protective and late degenerative phases. The degenerative phase involves a positive feedback loop between oocyte mitochondrial dysfunction mediated by a mitochondrial‐localized microprotein PIGBOS, and granulosa cell functional decline through a circular RNA circdlg1 ...

Bicistronic Expression of Ecdysone-Inducible Receptors in Mammalian Cells

open access: yesBioTechniques, 2001
The recent emergence of inducible expression systems for mammalian cells has greatly facilitated the in vivo analysis of gene function. The ecdysone-inducible expression system is particularly attractive because of (i) extremely low basal expression and ...

Complex engineering of Solanum alkaloids structural diversity in Nicotiana benthamiana

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 24, Issue 1, Page 328-345, January 2026.
Summary Transient expression in Nicotiana benthamiana offers a powerful and versatile platform for rapid production of complex specialized metabolites. Steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs) and steroidal saponins produced by members of the Solanaceae family are known for their diverse structures and activities including antimicrobial, anticancer, antiviral ...

TDP-43 loss-of-function causes neuronal loss due to defective steroid receptor-mediated gene program switching in Drosophila [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
TDP-43 proteinopathy is strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and related neurodegenerative disorders. Whether TDP-43 neurotoxicity is caused by a novel toxic gain-of-function mechanism of the aggregates or by a loss of

Metabolism of Epoxidised Withanolides by a Generalist and a Specialist Insect Species

open access: yesChemistryOpen, Volume 14, Issue 12, December 2025.
Larvae of Heliothis (Chloridea) virescence and subflexa have the ability to convert the epoxidized terpenoid 4β‐hydroxywithanolide E (4BHWE) to withanolide S. The conversion is found by feeding the larvae an artificial diet supplemented with 13C‐labeled 4BHWE.

Ecdysone Oxidase: Reaction and Specificity [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Biochemistry, 1978
Ecdysone oxidase oxidizes 3‐hydroxysteroids of the ecdysteroid type irreversibly to 3‐dehydro derivatives. The hydrogen of the steroid is transferred by the enzyme to oxygen which is reduced to hydrogen peroxide. Ecdysone oxidase is relatively specific for ecdysone and ecdysterone. Apparent Michaelis constants for these two physiological substrates are
