Insertional mutagenesis was used to construct an equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) mutant in which the open reading frame for glycoprotein D was replaced by a lacZ cassette. This gD deletion mutant (delta gD EHV-1) was unable to infect normally permissive RK cells in culture, but could be propagated in an EHV-1 gD-expressing cell line (RK/gD ...

In an attempt to determine if pregnant mice could be protected from abortion subsequent to challenge with equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) in the mouse model of EHV-1 disease, female BALB/c mice were inoculated with baculovirus-expressed EHV-1 glycoprotein B (bac-gB), wild-type baculovirus (bac-wt), rabbit kidney (RK-13) or baby hamster kidney (BHK-21 ...

International audienceEquine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) replicates extensively in the epithelium of the upper respiratory tract, after which it can spread throughout the body via a cell-associated viremia in mononuclear leukocytes reaching the pregnant ...

A murine model for studying EHV-1-induced abortion
Research in Veterinary Science, 1991Balb/c mice were infected with two abortigenic strains of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) by intranasal inoculation. The inoculation of one strain produced subclinical disease while the other produced a disease characterised by weight loss, constitutional signs, and death in the most severely affected animals.

Fatal Nonneurological EHV-1 Infection in a Yearling Filly
Veterinary Pathology, 2000A case of fatal nonneurological equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) infection in a yearling filly is described. Gross lesions included extensive pulmonary edema, prominent laryngeal lymphoid follicles, and congestion and edema of the dorsal third ventricle choroid plexus.

DNA-mediated immunization was assessed in a murine model of equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) respiratory infection. A single intramuscular injection with plasmid DNA encoding EHV-1 glycoprotein D (EHV-1 gD), including its predicted C-terminal membrane anchor sequence, induced a specific antibody response detectable by 2 weeks and maintained through 23 ...

The ability of recombinant preparations of equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) glycoprotein D (gD) to elicit specific antibody and T lymphocyte responses in the BALB/c mouse model of respiratory infection was investigated. Recombinant gD (rgD) expressed as a glutathione-S-transferase (GST) fusion protein in Escherichia coli elicited both high titer ...

Control of EHV-1 viremia and nasal shedding by commercial vaccines
Vaccine, 2010Equine herpesvirus-1 is a cause of outbreaks of abortion and neurological disease. The pathogenesis of both these diseases depends on establishment of viremia. An experiment was performed to determine the protective efficacy of two commercially available vaccines used with an optimized 3-dose vaccination regime: a modified-live viral (MLV) and a high ...

We have previously demonstrated that intramuscular inoculation of EHV-1 glycoprotein D (gD) and glycoprotein B (gB) produced by a recombinant baculovirus and formulated with the adjuvant Iscomatrix elicited virus-neutralizing antibody and gD- and gB-specific ELISA antibody in adult horses.

Control and disease clearance after neurological EHV‐1 in the UK
Veterinary Record, 2017Camilla Strang and Richard Newton of the AHT’s Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Group describe the management of a recent outbreak of equine herpesvirus type 1 neurological disease On 31 May 2017 the Animal Health Trust (AHT) was informed of a case of equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) neurological disease on a thoroughbred racing yard in northern
