Demystifying fungal systematics: A gateway to fungal literacy and societal/ecological relevance through familiar species

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 2, Page 499-515, March 2026.
Fungal systematics can feel overwhelming given the vast species diversity within this kingdom, with numerous subgroups at every taxonomic rank. This often creates a disconnect between the undertsnidng of fungal taxonomic diversity and their societal relevance.

Economic Impact and Disease Insights: Understanding Organ Condemnation in Cattle Slaughtered at Bahir Dar Abattoir

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 2, March 2026.
From 334 cattle slaughtered in the Bahir Dar municipal abattoir, different lesions resulting in total or partial organ condemnation were found in organs of 12 (3.6%) cattle. Organs affected by different lesions or disease were liver 14.6% (49/334), lung 9.9% (33/334), heart 2.40% (8/334), kidney 3.6% (12/334) and tongue 0.9% (3/334).

Phytosulfokine signalling blocks mycotoxin toxicity in Arabidopsis and mediates suppression of cell death activated by bacterial microbe‐associated molecular patterns

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 249, Issue 5, Page 2515-2530, March 2026.
Summary Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a mycotoxin that disrupts ceramide biosynthesis and kills plants. Prior activation with bacterial microbe‐associated molecular patterns (MAMPs), such as components of bacterial flagella, effectively suppresses FB1‐induced cell death.

Mycotoxins evaluation of total mixed ration (TMR) in bovine dairy farms: An update

open access: yesHeliyon
The total mixed ration (TMR) is currently a widespread method to feed dairy cows. It is a mixture of raw fodder and concentrate feed that can be contaminated by several mycotoxins.

Multi‐Criteria Decision Analysis for Designing Optimal Aflatoxin Monitoring Schemes in the Dairy Supply Chain

open access: yesRisk Analysis, Volume 46, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Designing effective food safety monitoring schemes is a complex task involving multiple, often conflicting, criteria. This study applied Multi‐Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to evaluate and identify optimal aflatoxin monitoring schemes along a Dutch dairy supply chain—a critical context where aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination in feed can ...

C26 | Emerging mycotoxins in the pig production chain: development and validation of a multi-residue UHPLC-HRMS method for detection in pork, liver and pig feed

open access: yesItalian Journal of Food Safety
Purpose. This study is part of the growing scientific interest in emerging mycotoxins, a group of contaminants that are not yet regulated but are increasingly detected in food and feed. The incidence of these secondary metabolites, produced by different

Label‐Free Sensing of Coronaviral Sequences via Kretschmann‐Configuration Reflectance Spectroscopic Ellipsometry: Sensitivity, Specificity, and Interfacial Effects

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 13, Issue 4, 17 February 2026.
Spectroscopic ellipsometry in the Kretschmann‐Raether configuration (KRSE) is employed to characterize a DNA‐functionalized platform for viral sequence recognition. By merging SE with surface plasmon resonance, KRSE outperforms conventional SE, achieving nanomolar targeting through resonance wavelength shifts (δλ) measurements. Its enhanced interfacial

Mycotoxins in Portuguese Agricultural Maize Fields and Dairy Farms

open access: yesToxins
Fungal and mycotoxin control at a primary stage in the food chain is crucial to maintaining the nutritional quality of animal feed. The control of fungal and mycotoxins is one of the essential points that a good biosecurity program must establish to ...

Novel Antifungal Scaffold Targeting Tubulin Overcomes Sclerotinia Sclerotiorum Resistance

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 8, 9 February 2026.
Addressing pesticide resistance, novel chromone‐acylhydrazone hybrids targeting fungal tubulin are synthesized. Compound G24 potently inhibited S. sclerotiorum (EC50 = 0.21µg mL−1) and demonstrated enhanced field performance via microencapsulation, offering a sustainable strategy against resistance and for global food security.
