Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

End-of-Life Discussion

open access: yesVoices in Bioethics, 2014
The discussion around end-of-life issues largely centers on the right of the patient to choose (to refuse life sustaining treatment, or, in some cases, to end his or her life through physician assisted suicide or euthanasia where it has been legalized) or to preserve life through invasive treatment.

Psychotherapy at the End of Life

open access: yesThe Primary Care Companion For CNS Disorders, 2012
As a nurse working at the community living center of the local Veterans Administration hospital and a doctor working in geriatrics and extended care at the same facility, we are both concerned with helping veterans adjust at life’s end. The veterans admitted to our unit are designated to receive either palliative care or end-of-life care.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

“The great escape”: how an incident of elopement gave rise to trauma informed palliative care for a patient experiencing multiple disadvantage

open access: yesBMC Palliative Care
Background This case report from Scotland, UK illustrates how unresolved traumatic experiences across the life course can affect a patient’s engagement with palliative care and offers insights into the flexibility and adaptations necessary for taking a ...

Social workers’ involvement in advance care planning: a systematic narrative review

open access: yesBMC Palliative Care, 2017
Background Advance care planning is a process of discussion that enables competent adults to express their wishes about end-of-life care through periods of decisional incapacity.

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.
