Healthcare-associated infections are associated with insufficient dietary intake: an observational cross-sectional study. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Indicators to predict healthcare-associated infections (HCAI) are scarce. Malnutrition is known to be associated with adverse outcomes in healthcare but its identification is time-consuming and rarely done in daily practice.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Relationship between locomotor play of dairy calves and their weight gains and energy intakes around weaning

open access: yesAnimal, 2015
Play behaviour has been proposed as a measure of good welfare in growing animals and locomotor play by calves is often reduced after weaning off milk.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Behavioral Patterns, Rather Than Environmental Factors, Shape the Energy Balance of Wintering Chinese Mergansers (Mergus squamatus) in Huangshan

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Animal energy intake and expenditure strategies in response to environmental fluctuations have been widely studied. Optimal foraging theory (OFT) is the dominant framework in this field; however, studies addressing the OFT in endangered waterbird species

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Impact of energy intake on the association between protein intake and the prevalence of frailty in older Korean adults: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2014–2018

open access: yesThe Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging
Objectives: Findings regarding dietary protein and frailty are inconsistent. This inconsistency may be attributed to variations in energy intake adequacy.

Acutely decreased thermoregulatory energy expenditure or decreased activity energy expenditure both acutely reduce food intake in mice. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Despite the suggestion that reduced energy expenditure may be a key contributor to the obesity pandemic, few studies have tested whether acutely reduced energy expenditure is associated with a compensatory reduction in food intake.

Protecting energy intakes against income shocks

open access: yesJournal of Economic Behavior & Organization, 2017
Whether and how changes in economic circumstances or household income affect individuals' diet and nutritional intakes is of substantial interest for policy purposes. This paper exploits a period of substantial income volatility in Russia to examine the extent to which, as well as how individuals protect their energy intakes in the face of ...
