Hybridizing the harmony search algorithm with a spreadsheet 'Solver' for solving continuous engineering optimization problems

open access: yes, 2009
In this article, a hybrid global-local optimization algorithm is proposed to solve continuous engineering optimization problems. In the proposed algorithm, the harmony search (HS) algorithm is used as a global-search method and hybridized with a ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Net saving improvement of capacitor banks in power distribution systems by increasing daily size switching number: A comparative result analysis by artificial intelligence

open access: yesThe Journal of Engineering
This paper studies the effect of the number of switching (NOS) per day of capacitor banks on loss reduction in radial distribution systems. To this aim, the daytime (more precisely, 24 h) is divided into different numbers of time segments (equal to the ...

Network divergence analysis identifies adaptive gene modules and two orthogonal vulnerability axes in pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumors contain diverse cellular states whose behavior is shaped by context‐dependent gene coordination. By comparing gene–gene relationships across biological contexts, we identify adaptive transcriptional modules that reorganize into distinct vulnerability axes.

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer. We identify PMEPA1 (protein TMEPAI) as a novel COMP‐binding partner that mediates EMT via binding to the TSP domains of COMP, establishing the COMP–PMEPA1 axis as a key EMT driver in breast cancer.

Flux Weakening Strategy Optimization for Five-Phase PM Machine with Concentrated Windings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The paper applies an Efficient Global Optimization method (EGO) to improve the efficiency, in flux weakening region, of a given 5-phase Permanent Magnet (PM) machine. An optimal control for the four independent currents is thus defined.
