ABSTRACT In this study, we explored the population genetic structure and its relation to environmental adaptations of the dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) in the western Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Although previously two populations within the Mediterranean Sea were identified, recent evidence suggests more complex structuring.

We use for the first time whole‐genome sequencing to explore current and historical patterns of genetic diversity in European hake in the Northeastern Atlantic, focusing on the recently expanded distribution range in the North Sea. Genomic data revealed a complex scenario with three populations: North Sea, Celtic Sea and Portugal.

Early life stages of anchovy were investigated in the Gulf of Tunis by means of four seasonal surveys carried out from summer 2002 to spring 2003. Anchovy eggs and larvae were found all year round, but they were much more abundant in spring and summer ...

ABSTRACT Identifying efficient otolith subsampling strategies that maintain data quality for stock assessments is imperative given limited resources to meet age‐estimation demands of managed fish stocks. Our objective was to evaluate the performance of three different subsampling strategies: (1) fixed otolith subsampling, (2) proportional otolith ...

The life cycle of Engraulis encrasicolus sensu lato in the Guadiana estuary: Ecology, Ecohydrology and Biology [PDF]
Tese dout., Ecologia das populações, Universidade do Algarve, 2007O estuário do Guadiana é o segundo estuário português mais bem conservado, mas também o segundo mais vulnerável aos impactes antropogénicos. As barragens são uma das principais fontes de

The Overlooked Threat of Global Warming on Elasmobranch Fertility
ABSTRACT Climate change is increasingly recognised as a critical threat to global biodiversity, yet its impacts on reproductive processes remain poorly understood in many marine taxa. Elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) represent a particularly vulnerable group due to their peculiar life histories, low fecundity, and diverse reproductive modes.

Feeding of anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus larvae in the north-west Mediterranean
Anchovy larvae, collected at 107 stations in the north-west Mediterranean were analysed, in relation to three possible variables, the diurnal or nocturnal time of sampling, the location of sampling stations in relation to the neritic and oceanic domain, and the assignation of anchovy samples to each of the two main anchovy spawning grounds in the ...

Abstract The John Dory Zeus faber is a commercially exploited demersal fish species with a known distribution ranging from the Northeast Atlantic to parts of the Indian and Pacific oceans. A previous genetic survey using cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) DNA barcodes suggested the presence of two geographically segregated taxonomic units within Z ...

Abstract It has been suggested that angiogenesis during skeletal muscle fibre hypertrophy allows escape from the ‘size constraint’, which is the inverse relationship between oxidative capacity and muscle fibre cross‐sectional area (FCSA). It is, however, not known whether there are any limitations to the combinations of FCSA, oxidative capacity and ...
