The degree of enhancer or promoter activity is reflected by the levels and directionality of eRNA transcription

open access: yesGenes & Development, 2018
Here, Mikhaylichenko et al. investigate the transcriptional properties of enhancers during Drosophila embryogenesis using characterized developmental enhancers.

Technology Enhanced Technology Enhanced Learning [PDF]

open access: yesJe-LKS: Journal of E-Learning and Knowledge Society, 2010
The application of modern technologies in education does not necessarily lead to positive results. An important factor is how these technologies are used. This paper describes some ideas about using technology to enhance Technology Enhanced Learning itself.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis sulfurtransferase SseA is activated by its neighboring gene product Rv3284

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Tuberculosis remains a global health challenge and new therapeutic targets are required. Here, we characterized SseA, a sulfurtransferase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis involved in macrophage infection, and its interaction with the newly identified protein SufEMtb that activates SseA enzymatic activity.

The Number of Transcription Factors at an Enhancer Determines Switch-like Gene Expression

open access: yesCell Reports, 2020
Summary: NF-κB is a transcription factor that activates super enhancers (SEs) and typical enhancers (TEs) and triggers threshold and graded gene expression, respectively.

Enhancer Redundancy Allows for Phenotypic Robustness in Mammalian Development

open access: yesNature, 2017
Distant-acting tissue-specific enhancers, which regulate gene expression, vastly outnumber protein-coding genes in mammalian genomes, but the functional importance of this regulatory complexity remains unclear. Here we show that the pervasive presence of

Aβ42 promotes the aggregation of α‐synuclein splice isoforms via heterogeneous nucleation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The aggregation of amyloid‐β (Aβ) and α‐synuclein (αSyn) is associated with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. This study reveals that Aβ aggregates serve as potent nucleation sites for the aggregation of αSyn and its splice isoforms, shedding light on the intricate interplay between these two pathogenic proteins.

Identification and characterization of two critical sequences in SV40PolyA that activate the green fluorescent protein reporter gene

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2011
Alu repeats or Line-1-ORF2 (ORF2) inhibit expression of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene when inserted downstream of this gene in the vector pEGFP-C1.

Functional role and tobacco smoking effects on methylation of CYP1A1 gene in prostate cancer. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A1 is a phase I enzyme that can activate various compounds into reactive forms and thus, may contribute to carcinogenesis. In this study, we investigated the expression, methylation status, and functional role of CYP1A1 on prostate
