Remote Magnetomechanical Neuromodulation Uncovers Therapeutic Mechanisms for Alleviating Parkinsonian Symptoms in Freely Moving Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Magnetomechanical neuromodulation using magnetic nanodiscs enables remote activation of neurons. In a hemiparkinsonian mouse model, alternating magnetic fields actuate the nanodiscs to generate torque that opens mechanosensitive ion channels within the subthalamic nucleus, thereby modulating basal ganglia motor circuitry.

Computer Vision Enables Monitoring and Kinetic Analysis of Structurally Diverse Carbon Monoxide Surrogates

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
A non‐contact computer vision method enables monitoring and quantitative comparison of vessel‐specific CO release kinetics from structurally diverse surrogates in two‐chamber COware reactors, revealing that surrogate reactivity scores correlate with carbonylation reaction outcomes.

The Vertical Structure and Entrainment of Subglacial Melt Water Plumes

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2022
Basal melting of marine‐terminating glaciers, through its impact on the forces that control the flow of the glaciers, is one of the major factors determining sea level rise in a world of global warming.

Neural Entrainment and Perception [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Neural oscillations are intrinsically rhythmic. With rhythmic stimulation, the endogenous neural oscillations become phase-locked to the external rhythm, resulting in oscillatory and stimulus-dependent changes in neural excitability.

Direct Measurement of the Gas Entrainment Into a Turbulent Thermal Plasma Jet [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
An experimental study is conducted to investigate the entrainment characteristics of a turbulent thermal plasma jet issuing from a DC arc plasma torch operating at atmospheric pressure.

Synchronization‐Dissipation in the Cardiorespiratory System

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
By modeling central nervous coupling and viscoelastic interactions in the cardiorespiratory system we show that synchronization produces a 10% gain in cardiac efficiency in humans. It is surmised that respiratory sinus arrhythmia improves cardiac pumping efficiency by reducing dynamic stress and power dissipation in the pulmonary vasculature.

The oscillatory entrainment of virtual pitch perception [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Evidence suggests that synchronized brain oscillations in the low gamma range (around 33 Hz) are involved in the perceptual integration of harmonic complex tones.

Phase Fraction Modulation Enhances Li+/Na+ Diffusion Disparity in Spent LiFePO4 Cathodes for Efficient Lithium Extraction from Brine

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A direct cascaded utilization strategy for spent LiFePO4 batteries efficiently extracts lithium from brine, embodying the “urban mining” concept. Phase fraction modulation revealed its significant impact on local bond lengths of crystal structure and the Li/Na diffusion energy barrier, identifying the best material (Li0.19FePO4) for lithium extraction.

Unpacking the gender-role interaction of prosodic entrainment in Chinese long-and-short turn-taking: evidence from perceptual and acoustic similarities

open access: yesHumanities & Social Sciences Communications
Prosodic entrainment, the phenomenon of speakers adapting their speech patterns to each other, has been extensively studied in short turn-taking conversations.

Enhancing Biogenic Formic Acid Production in the Modified OxFA Process by Acetonitrile Addition

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this study, the beneficial effect of using acetonitrile as a co‐solvent in the modified OxFA process is shown, outperforming methanol, demonstrating improved reaction kinetics combined with high selectivity for the HPA‐2 (H5PV2Mo10O40) catalyzed oxidation of xylose to FA.
