Teach Second Law of Thermodynamics via Analysis of Flow through Packed Beds and Consolidated Porous Media

open access: yesFluids, 2019
The second law of thermodynamics is indispensable in engineering applications. It allows us to determine if a given process is feasible or not, and if the given process is feasible, how efficient or inefficient is the process.

Exploiting multi-word units in history-based probabilistic generation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We present a simple history-based model for sentence generation from LFG f-structures, which improves on the accuracy of previous models by breaking down PCFG independence assumptions so that more f-structure conditioning context is used in the ...

Entropy generation analysis of electrodialysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Electrodialysis (ED) is a desalination technology with many applications. In order to better understand how the energetic performance of this technology can be improved, the various losses in the system should be quantified and characterized. This can be

Heterozygous loss‐of‐function alleles associate the conserved 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease EXOSC10 with hypersensitivity to the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
EXOSC10, an essential nuclear RNA exosome‐associated 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease, is inhibited by the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU), and EXOSC10 depletion increases 5‐FU sensitivity. The colon‐cancer variant EXOSC10S402T, located in a proteolysis motif, is stable and nuclear but nonfunctional in vivo.

Entropy generation analysis in an evaporative air-cooled heat exchanger

open access: yesJournal of Thermal Science and Technology, 2014
In the present study, air-side entropy generation rate for an evaporative air-cooled heat exchanger has been investigated using thermodynamic second-law analysis.

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

Second law efficiency and thermal entropy generation of 30:70% of glycerol + water based SiO2 nanofluids in a thermosyphon flat plate collector: Experimental and Bayesian artificial neural network algorithm

open access: yesInternational Journal of Thermofluids
This research examines the thermal entropy generation, frictional entropy generation, entropy generation number, and energy efficiency, which were experimentally assessed for a flat plate collector functioning under thermosyphon conditions utilizing a ...

Entropy generation during fluid flow in sharp edge wavy channels with horizontal pitch

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2016
In this study, the volumetric entropy generation rate is analyzed in sharp edge wavy channels. A two-dimensional steadily developing fluid flow is considered. Air is considered as the working fluid in the numerical analysis.

Effect of Incidence Angle on Entropy Generation in the Boundary Layers on the Blade Suction Surface in a Compressor Cascade

open access: yesEntropy, 2019
The entropy generation that occurs within boundary layers over a C4 blade at a Reynolds number of 24,000 and incidence angles (i) of 0°, 2.5°, 5°, 7.5°, and 10° are investigated experimentally using a particle image velocimetry ...
