Phylogenetic classification of short environmental DNA fragments [PDF]

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 2008
Metagenomics is providing striking insights into the ecology of microbial communities. The recently developed massively parallel 454 pyrosequencing technique gives the opportunity to rapidly obtain metagenomic sequences at a low cost and without cloning bias.

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Attempted DNA extraction from a Rancho La Brea Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi): prospects for ancient DNA from asphalt deposits. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Fossil-bearing asphalt deposits are an understudied and potentially significant source of ancient DNA. Previous attempts to extract DNA from skeletons preserved at the Rancho La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles, California, have proven unsuccessful, but it ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Genomic resources for the monitoring and management of Tometes trilobatus, Hoplias aimara and Myloplus rhomboidalis, three exploited freshwater fish species in French Guiana

open access: yesKnowledge and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems
The Neotropical region, hosts a quarter of all freshwater fish species, while providing important food resources for local human populations. The management of neotropical freshwater ecosystems is thus of primary importance for both biodiversity ...

Comparative analysis of diet composition and gut parasite diversity in bar-headed geese and ruddy shelducks using environmental dna metabarcoding [PDF]

open access: yesKafkas Universitesi Veteriner Fakültesi Dergisi
We comprehensively analyzed the dietary preferences and intestinal parasite diversity of two waterbirds, the Ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea) and the Bar-headed goose (Anser indicus), using environmental DNA metabarcoding with the 18S rDNA V9 (for ...

Assessing the carcinogenic potential of low-dose exposures to chemical mixtures in the environment: the challenge ahead. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Lifestyle factors are responsible for a considerable portion of cancer incidence worldwide, but credible estimates from the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) suggest that the fraction of cancers ...

Amazonian mammal monitoring using aquatic environmental DNA

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, 2020
AbstractEnvironmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding has emerged as one of the most efficient methods to assess aquatic species presence. While the method can in theory be used to investigate nonaquatic fauna, its development for inventorying semi‐aquatic and terrestrial fauna is still at an early stage.

Nicotinamide N‐methyltransferase promotes drug resistance in lung cancer, as revealed by nascent proteomic profiling

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
AZD9291 has shown promise in targeted cancer therapy but is limited by resistance. In this study, we employed metabolic labeling and LC–MS/MS to profile time‐resolved nascent protein perturbations, allowing dynamic tracking of drug‐responsive proteins. We demonstrated that increased NNMT expression is associated with drug resistance, highlighting NNMT ...
