Biomaterial Strategies for Targeted Intracellular Delivery to Phagocytes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Phagocytes are essential to a functional immune system, and their behavior defines disease outcomes. Engineered particles offer a strategic opportunity to target phagocytes, harnessing inflammatory modulation in disease. By tuning features like size, shape, and surface, these systems can modulate immune responses and improve targeted treatment for a ...

Health care resource utilization and characteristics of patients with eosinophilic asthma in secondary health care in Finland

open access: yesEuropean Clinical Respiratory Journal, 2018
Background: Eosinophilic airway inflammation is common in asthma patients and appears to be associated with severe exacerbations and loss of asthma control.

Eosinophils Are More Strongly Relevant to Allergic Sensitization Than Basophils in Pediatric Adenotonsillar Hypertrophy

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics, 2021
The relationship between eosinophils/basophils and allergic sensitization is not clear in pediatric adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH). The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between eosinophil/basophil counts and peripheral ...

Eosinophil Granule Proteins: Form and Function

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2014
Experimental and clinical data strongly support a role for the eosinophil in the pathogenesis of asthma, allergic and parasitic diseases, and hypereosinophilic syndromes, in addition to more recently identified immunomodulatory roles in shaping innate ...

The eosinophil enigma [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Investigation, 2004
Eosinophils accumulate in high numbers in the lungs of asthmatic patients. These cells have the ability to induce tissue damage, a capacity that relates to their traditional role in host defense against parasitic worms. On the other hand, eosinophils produce growth factors associated with tissue repair and remodeling, notably TGF-beta1.

Nanocarrier‐Based Targeting of Pattern Recognition Receptors as an Innovative Strategy for Enhancing Sepsis Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review highlights recent progress in nanocarriers targeting pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), including Toll‐like and NOD‐like receptors, for enhancing the treatment of bacterial sepsis and related complications. These nanomedicines deliver antibiotics and anti‐inflammatory agents while modulating immune responses.

The transcription factor XBP1 is selectively required for eosinophil differentiation

open access: yesNature Immunology, 2015
The transcription factor XBP1 has been linked to the development of highly secretory tissues such as plasma cells and Paneth cells, yet its function in granulocyte maturation has remained unknown. Here we discovered an unexpectedly selective and absolute

Programmed Aggregation of Lipidated Nitrobenzoselenadiazole as a Photo‐Activatable Pyroptosis Inducer

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents alkylated nitrobenzoselenadiazole (NBSD) photosensitizers that self‐assemble into programmable aggregates, enabling photo‐triggered pyroptosis and enhanced ROS generation. The lead compound, NBSD‐NOc, exhibits superior photodynamic activity, high cellular uptake, and implantable gel compatibility with pH‐responsive release.

Role of Adhesion Molecules in Eosinophil Activation: A Comparative Study on the Effect of Adhesion Molecules on Eosinophil Survival

open access: yesAllergology International, 2004
Background: Adhesion molecules participate in an important part of inflammatory process in relation to the accumulation of inflammatory cells, such as eosinophils. The expression of adhesion molecules differs depending upon the cells and tissue.
