Ultrastructure of gliosomes in ependymal cells of the lizard
Journal of Ultrastructure Research, 1975Gliosomes similar to those already described by other authors in amphibia and mammalia were found in the hypothalamic region of Lacerta s. sicula Raf. The internal matrix of these particular organelles, which closely resemble transformed mitochondria, is in a more or less advanced state of crystallization.

Ubiquitin-positive inclusions in ependymal cells
Acta Neuropathologica, 2003Ubiquitin-positive inclusions (UbIs) have not been well studied in ependymal cells. Since we detected such UbIs in the central canals of the medulla and spinal cord while investigating UbIs in neurodegenerative diseases, we studied UbIs in the entire ependymal system of 42 patients with various neurological diseases and of 10 non-neurological controls.

Ependymal cells: biology and pathology
Acta Neuropathologica, 2009The literature was reviewed to summarize the current understanding of the role of ciliated ependymal cells in the mammalian brain. Previous reviews were summarized. Publications from the past 10 years highlight interactions between ependymal cells and the subventricular zone and the possible role of restricted ependymal populations in neurogenesis ...

Modifications of ependymal cells membranes by galactocerebrosides in cell culture
Neuroscience Letters, 1992In this paper we have demonstrated that treatment of ependymal cells in culture by galactocerebrosides induced a decrease in plasma membrane fluidity and an increase of EGF binding sites. We have shown in a previous work that galactocerebroside in vitro and in vivo caused an important morphological change in ependymal cells that grew into an astrocytic

Ependymal cells in tissue culture
Zeitschrift für Zellforschung und Mikroskopische Anatomie, 1957Ciliated ependymal cells from various locations of the ventricular system of mammals showed outgrowth either in the form of epithelial sheets or in the form of “pools” and elongated double rows, dependant on the site from which the ependyma was taken and on the original orientation of the cells in respect to the cover slip.

Morphological diversity of ependymal cells in tissue culture
Brain Research Bulletin, 1990Ependymal cells were visualized in primary cultures of cerebral cortex from rat using an immunohistochemical staining technique. Five different morphological subtypes of cuboidal ependyma were recognized: 1) round, 2) triangular, 3) columnar, 4) cone- and spindle-shaped, and 5) large pleomorphic cells.

Overexpression of nestin and vimentin in ependymal cells in hydrocephalus
Acta Neuropathologica, 1996In order to elucidate the immunohistochemical features of hydrocephalic ependyma, immunohistochemical examination was undertaken in 11 normal, postmortem brains (age range, 11 weeks' postconception to 6 months after birth) and 12 hydrocephalic brains (three cases each of congenital aqueductal stenosis, Dandy-Walker malformation, Arnold-Chiari type II ...

Ependymal cell differentiation, from monociliated to multiciliated cells
2015Primary and motile cilia differ in their structure, composition, and function. In the brain, primary cilia are immotile signalling organelles present on neural stem cells and neurons. Multiple motile cilia are found on the surface of ependymal cells in all brain ventricles, where they contribute to the flow of cerebrospinal fluid.

Morphology of the Ependymal Cells of the Bovine Area Postrema
Anatomia, Histologia, Embryologia, 1991SummaryThis communication describes the ultrastructure of the ependyma of the bovine area postrema. The polygonal cells possessed an abundant apical array of microvilli but were nonciliated with the exception of occasional cells at the periphery of the area, which had a central kinocilium.

Ultrastructure of ependymal cells of the shark median eminence
The Anatomical Record, 1974AbstractThe ultrastructure of ependymal cells of the median eminence in young Pacific blacktip reef sharks is described. Three major cell types have been observed. The first type is an irregularly‐shaped, electron dense cell with many long microvilli and occasional cilia projecting into the ventricle.
