CD24 regulated gene expression and distribution of tight junction proteins is associated with altered barrier function in oral epithelial monolayers

open access: yesBMC Cell Biology, 2009
Background Control of intercellular penetration of microbial products is critical for the barrier function of oral epithelia. We demonstrated that CD24 is selectively and strongly expressed in the cells of the epithelial attachment to the tooth and the ...

The Influence of extracellular matrix on lens epithelial cell viability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Posterior capsular opacification is the main complication of cataract surgery and results from the proliferation, migration and differentiation of lens epithelial cells remaining in the capsular bag. To better understand this pathological cell behaviour,

"In vitro" reconstitution of "trans"-Golgi exit and the effect of GAG attachment on protein sorting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The trans-Golgi network is one of the main sorting stations for proteins and lipids in the eukaryotic endomembrane system. Yet, the mechanisms for sorting and transport out of the trans-Golgi network remain poorly understood.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Neuraminidase-activated Attachment of Actinomyces naeslundii ATCC 12104 to Human Buccal Epithelial Cells

open access: yes, 1983
The attachment of Actinomyces naeslundii ATCC 12104 to human buccal epithelial cells pre-treated with neuraminidase (sialidase) was evaluated. Both commercial clostridial neuraminidase and neuraminidase preparations from the test strain of A.

Derivation and characterization of retinal pigment epithelium from urine‐derived iPSCs

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Age‐related macular degeneration causes vision loss via RPE dysfunction and loss. Traditional iPSC therapies rely on invasive biopsies, limiting scalability. Here, we utilize urine‐derived stem cells as an accessible source to generate u‐iPSCs, successfully differentiated into pigmented RPE. This “Urine‐to‐Retina” platform provides a promising path for

Histopathology of the small airways: Similarities and differences between ageing and COPD

open access: yesPulmonology
Age-related lung function decline is associated with small airway closure and gas trapping. The mechanisms which cause these changes are not fully understood. It has been suggested that COPD is caused by accelerated ageing.

L-Carnitine Protects Renal Tubular Cells Against Calcium Oxalate Monohydrate Crystals Adhesion Through Preventing Cells From Dedifferentiation

open access: yesKidney & Blood Pressure Research, 2016
Background/Aims: The interactions between calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystals and renal tubular epithelial cells are important for renal stone formation but still unclear.

A Technique for the Removal of Junctional Epithelium from the Epithelial Attachment

open access: yes, 1978
A technique utilizing sodium deoxycholate to remove junctional epithelial cells from the epithelial attachment zone is described. Light and electron micragrayhs show a simalarity in size and appearance between the extracetlutar attachment substance in ...
