Serotype-dependent adhesion of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli to bovine milk fat globule membrane proteins

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are food-borne pathogens that can cause severe symptoms for humans. Raw milk products are often incriminated as vehicule for human STEC infection.

A connection between bacterial chemotactic network and optimal filtering [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. Lett. 126, 128102 (2021), 2020
The chemotactic network of Escherichia coli has been studied extensively both biophysically and information-theoretically. Nevertheless, the connection between these two aspects is still elusive. In this work, we report such a connection by showing that a standard biochemical model of the chemotactic network is mathematically equivalent to an ...

Escherichia coli Pathobionts Associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

open access: yesClinical Microbiology Reviews, 2019
Gut bacteria play a key role in initiating and maintaining the inflammatory process in the gut tissues of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, by supplying antigens or other stimulatory factors that trigger immune cell activation.

Transient drift of Escherichia coli under diffusing Step nutrient profile [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. E 98, 052413 (2018), 2018
Bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) exhibit biased motion if kept in a spatially non-uniform chemical environment. Here, we bring out unique time-dependent characteristics of bacterial chemotaxis, in response to a diffusing spatial step ligand profile.

New tools for recombinant protein production in Escherichia coli: A 5‐year update

open access: yesProtein Science, 2019
The production of proteins in sufficient amounts is key for their study or use as biotherapeutic agents. Escherichia coli is the host of choice for recombinant protein production given its fast growth, easy manipulation, and cost‐effectiveness.

Structural and mechanistic basis for the regulation of the chloroplast signal recognition particle by (p)ppGpp

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LHCPs are transported to the thylakoid membrane via the (cp)SRP pathway. This process involves a transit complex of (cp)SRP43, (cp)SRP54 and LHCP, which interacts with (cp)FtsY and Alb3 at the membrane. GTP hydrolysis by (cp)SRP54 and (cp)FtsY triggers complex dissociation.

Virulence plasmids in edema disease: Insights from whole-genome analysis of porcine O139:H1 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
This study investigates the plasmid sequences of porcine O139:H1 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) responsible for Edema Disease (ED). Whole-genome analysis reveals significant similarities between these strains and known plasmids, notably ...

The Intriguing Evolutionary Journey of Enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) toward Pathogenicity

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2017
Among the intestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli, enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) are a group of intracellular pathogens able to enter epithelial cells of colon, multiplicate within them, and move between adjacent cells with a mechanism similar to Shigella,

What is the 'minimum inhibitory concentration' (MIC) of pexiganan acting on Escherichia coli? - A cautionary case study [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysics of Infection. Volume 915 of the series Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology. Springer pp 33-48 (2016), 2016
We measured the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the antimicrobial peptide pexiganan acting on Escherichia coli, and report an intrinsic variability in such measurements. These results led to a detailed study of the effect of pexiganan on the growth curve of E. coli, using a plate reader and manual plating (i.e. time-kill curves). The measured

Structure and genetics of Escherichia coli O antigens

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Reviews, 2019
Escherichia coli includes clonal groups of both commensal and pathogenic strains, with some of the latter causing serious infectious diseases. O antigen variation is current standard in defining strains for taxonomy and epidemiology, providing the basis ...
