Mutations that Separate the Functions of the Proofreading Subunit of the Escherichia coli Replicase

open access: yes, 2015
The dnaQ gene of Escherichia coli encodes the Ɛ subunit of DNA polymerase III, which provides the 3\u27 - 5\u27 exonuclease proofreading activity of the replicative polymerase.

Biointerface Membranes Orchestrating Site‐Specific Osteoimmunomodulatory and Antibacterial Effects for Enhanced Osseous Regeneration in Periodontal Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Here, a biointerface membrane engineered with site‐specific interfacial properties is developed. During implantation between gingival and bone defect, the membrane creates a pro‐osteogenic microenvironment, precisely modulates cellular activities at each biointerface, and facilitates the orchestration of complex healing events, ultimately leading to ...

Amyloidogenic Peptide Fragments Designed From Bacterial Collagen‐like Proteins Form Hydrogel

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study identified amyloidogenic sequence motifs in bacterial collagen‐like proteins and exploited these to design peptides that self‐assemble into β‐sheet fibers and form hydrogels. One hydrogel supported healthy fibroblast growth, showing promise for biocompatible materials. Our work demonstrates that bacterial sequences can be harnessed to create

Membrane Vesicles from Lacticaseibacillus Casei BL23 Exhibit Antimicrobial Activity Against Escherichia coli and Immunostimulatory Effects on Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Membrane vesicles derived from the probiotic Lacticaseibacillus casei BL23 demonstrate antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli and a potential biological effect in improving the overall survival of C. elegans infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These vesicles stimulated immune responses in primary cells without causing toxicity. Our results

MCE domain proteins: conserved inner membrane lipid-binding proteins required for outer membrane homeostasis

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Bacterial proteins with MCE domains were first described as being important for Mammalian Cell Entry. More recent evidence suggests they are components of lipid ABC transporters.

Transformative Bioactive Wear Resistant Ti3Au:N and Ti3Au:O Coatings for Medical Implants and Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Coatings of titanium‐gold are grown in nitrogen and oxygen environments via magnetron sputtering to simultaneously enhance their biotribological and antibacterial properties. The coatings are highly crystalline with superhard scratch‐resistant surfaces and wear rates 20 times lower than the bare Ti‐6Al‐4V substrate.
