The Invasive Alien Species Callinectes sapidus Threatens the Restoration of Ostrea edulis and Paracentrotus lividus in the Mediterranean Sea [PDF]

open access: yesAnimals
The European flat oyster Ostrea edulis and the stony sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus play key ecological roles in Mediterranean coastal ecosystems, supporting biodiversity and ecosystem functions.

Oysters in transition: hermaphrodite oysters display unique DNA methylation patterns in gill tissue [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Genomics
Background European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) are sequential hermaphrodites that alternate sex in response to environmental change. Epigenetics, including DNA methylation, are often involved in sex reversal through influencing gene transcription ...

Performance of European oysters (Ostrea edulis L.) in the Dutch North Sea, across five restoration pilots

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
IntroductionThe European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) is a biogenic reef former, internationally recognised as threatened and declining in the NE Atlantic by OSPAR and one of the focal species in nature inclusive designs in offshore windfarms in The ...

Hatchery seed production of flat oysters from the Mar Menor lagoon

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
The Mar Menor lagoon (SE Spain) suffers a severe eutrophication process aggravated since the collapse of the lagoon in 2016. Together with it, the populations of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis have been decimated in the lagoon, but also in the European ...

The potential impact of human interventions at different scales in offshore wind farms to promote flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) reef development in the southern North Sea

open access: yesAquatic Living Resources, 2023
Incorporation of ecology and ecosystem services into marine infrastructural developments has gained interest over the last decades. Growing attention is given to combine the massive roll-out of offshore wind farms in the North Sea with reinstating the ...

Chromosomal assembly of the flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) genome as a new genetic resource for aquaculture

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, 2022
The European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) is a native bivalve of the European coasts. Harvest of this species has declined during the last decades because of the appearance of two parasites that have led to the collapse of the stocks and the loss of ...

The late Holocene demise of a sublittoral oyster bed in the North Sea.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
A fossil oyster bed (Ostrea edulis) was recently encountered offshore Helgoland (German Bight). Oysters are important filter feeders in marine environments and their habitat structure supports a large associated biodiversity.

Reduced Female Gene Flow in the European Flat Oyster Ostrea edulis [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Heredity, 2004
The geographical structure of 15 natural populations of the flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) was assessed by single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) of a 313-base-pair (bp) fragment of the mitochondrial 12S-rRNA gene. Fourteen haplotypes were observed, with one being dominant in the Mediterranean samples and another one in the Atlantic populations.

Fifty years of research to counter the decline of the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis): a review of French achievements and prospects for the restoration of remaining beds and revival of aquaculture production

open access: yesAquatic Living Resources, 2023
In the fifty years since the introduction of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and the first reports of the parasites Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae in European waters, numerous research projects dedicated to the native European flat oyster ...

Comparative Description and Analysis of Oyster Aquaculture in Selected Atlantic Regions: Production, Market Dynamics, and Consumption Patterns

open access: yesFishes, 2023
In the face of an increasing world population and a subsequent need for an increase in sustainable and healthy food production, low trophic species, such as oysters, emerge as a promising alternative.
