The European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, once formed extensive reef habitats throughout European seas and estuaries. These reefs are now largely functionally extinct, yet interest and support for their restoration is rapidly growing.

Characterization of 27 microsatellite loci in the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis [PDF]
AbstractThe flat oyster Ostrea edulis is native to Europe and populations have been severely depleted by the parasite Bonamia ostreae since the 1980s. Additional genetic markers are required to improve population genetics study and linkage map development for selection for B. ostrea‐resistance in this species.

A preliminary genetic linkage map for the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis [PDF]
The flat oyster Ostrea edulis is the species endemic to European coasts, both Atlantic and Mediterranean. It has been exploited since Roman times, but its aquaculture production decreased from around 20000 tons in the 1950's to 1500 tons today because of two successive diseases due to the intracellular parasites Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae.

Applicability of the gape monitor to study flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) feeding behaviour
Innovative techniques are needed to assess oyster performance in flat oyster reef restoration projects. A valve gape monitor, a device that continuously measures opening and closing of live bivalves, can potentially be used as an effective method to ...

Larvae Development Stages of the European Flat Oyster (Ostrea edulis) [PDF]
This paper reports on the larvae development of the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis (Linnaeus, 1758), from veliger to pediveliger stage. Adult oysters were induced to spawn by thermal stimulation and large amounts of veliger larvae were obtained for study. Veliger larvae were cultured in 180-l bins at a den- sity of 3 larvae/ml. Larvae, reared at 20±2°C and

Efficacy of microplastic depuration on two commercial oyster species from the west coast of Ireland
Studies investigating microplastics (MPs) in marine species have been published over recent decades, including studies on depuration efficacy on aquaculture products.

Experts in the oyster supply chain (farmers, retailers, and gourmet chefs) in The Netherlands have suggested that the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) has superior sensory qualities compared to the Pacific cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas).

Effect of temperature and trace metal exposure on early life stages of European flat oysters and Pacific oysters [PDF]
Ocean warming and metal pollution pose a threat to coastal ecosystems worldwide. In the German Bight, efforts to restore biogenic reefs using the native European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) face challenges due to environmental conditions and potential pollutants of the North Sea. Besides O.
