Identification of Blood Biomarkers for Alzheimer's Disease Through Computational Prediction and Experimental Validation

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2019
Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the major cause of dementia in population aged over 65 years, accounting up to 70% dementia cases. However, validated peripheral biomarkers for AD diagnosis are not available up to present.

Therapeutic Apheresis for Intravenous Methylprednisolone‐Refractory Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder: Clinical and Radiological Outcomes in a Single‐Center Case Series

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a relapsing autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. High‐dose intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) is the standard first‐line therapy for acute attacks, although some patients remain refractory.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Validation problems in computational fluid mechanics

open access: yesComputer Assisted Methods in Engineering and Science, 2017
Recent developments in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) increased interest in quantifying quality of the numerical models. One of the necessary steps is the so-called code validation procedure, an assessment of a numerical simulation by comparisons ...

Investigation on the Material Failure in a Small Scale Automotive Camera Module via Root Cause Analysis and Experimental Validation

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
Automotive camera modules are critical components for vision, detection, and recognition in an advanced driver assistance system. They usually consist of housing, a lens, a lens holder, a harness, seals, and printed circuit boards, which are assembled ...

Experimental Localism and External Validity

open access: yesPhilosophy of Science, 2003
Experimental “localism” stresses the importance of context-specific knowledge, and the limitations of universal theories in science. I illustrate Latour's radical approach to localism and show that it has some unpalatable consequences, in particular the suggestion that problems of external validity (or how to generalize experimental results to ...

Experimental Validation of a Three-Port Integrated Topology to Interface Electric Vehicles and Renewables With the Electrical Grid

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, 2018
This paper presents the analysis and the experimental validation of an off-board three-port integrated topology (TPIT) used to interface electric vehicles (EVs) and renewables from solar photovoltaic (PV) panels with the electrical power grid.
