The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigations on Transient Run-Up Procedures of Journal Bearings Including Mixed Friction Conditions

open access: yesLubricants, 2018
This paper focuses on the operating behavior of journal bearings for industrial machinery application during run-ups. For this purpose, a numerical simulation code that is based on a two-dimensional extended and generalized Reynolds equation and a full ...

Analysis of flow field design on vanadium redox flow battery performance: Development of 3D computational fluid dynamic model and experimental validation

open access: yesApplied Energy, 2018
Homogeneous distribution of the electrolyte over the porous electrode is a critical issue hindering the commercialization of vanadium redox flow batteries, owing to increased overpotential at high current and limited power density of the system ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Prospective clinical testing and experimental validation of the Pediatric Sepsis Biomarker Risk Model

open access: yesScience Translational Medicine, 2019
Prognostic biomarkers for pediatric septic shock are conserved in a murine model of sepsis and accelerate testing of precision medicine strategies. Persevering in the face of sepsis Despite modern therapies, sepsis remains a major clinical problem with a

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

A review of the models using the Cattaneo and Vernotte hyperbolic heat equation and their experimental validation

open access: yesInternational journal of thermal sciences, 2019
Models using Cattaneo and Vernotte hyperbolic heat equation or derived from it (Double Phase Lag model and their various versions) are very common in the present thermal literature, especially for simulating heat transfer at the meso scale, such as in ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Experimental Validation of a Risk Assessment Method

open access: yes, 2015
[Context and motivation] It is desirable that requirement engineering methods are reliable, that is, that methods can be repeated with the same results. Risk assessments methods, however, often have low reliability when they identify risk mitigations for a system based on expert judgement.

Numerical modelling and experimental validation of a regenerative electrocaloric cooler

open access: yesInternational journal of refrigeration, 2019
This paper reports on the research and development of a cooling device with an active electrocaloric regenerator (AER) based on the bulk ceramic material (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–xPbTiO3 (PMN-100xPT).
