Levels of Hemolysis Markers in Erythrocyte Concentrates Administered Using a Syringe Infusion Pump

open access: yes, 2018
Syringe infusion pumps (SIPs) led to major advances in infusion therapy and were gradually applied to the transfusion of packed red blood cells (RBCs), raising questions about possible cell damage. The objectives of this study were to determine levels of

Forecasting the Dialysis Burden in Japan: Validation‐Based Projections of Prevalence and Incidence Through 2050

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Japan has one of the highest dialysis prevalence rates worldwide and a shrinking, aging population. Whether dialysis burden has entered a sustained post‐peak phase or whether recent declines partly reflect pandemic‐related disruptions remains uncertain.

Placement of syringe infusion pumps and solution density can impact infusion performance: An experimental study

open access: yes, 2019
Aim: To verify how variations in the height and solution density can influence syringe infusion pumps accuracy. Methods: Three syringe infusion pumps were studied in two infusion rates 0.5 ml/h and 10.0 ml/h.

Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Meropenem by Extended or Continuous Infusion in Low Body Weight Critically Ill Patients

open access: yesAntibiotics, 2021
Background: Pathophysiological changes such as extreme body weights in critically ill patients with severe infections may alter the pharmacokinetics (PK) of antimicrobials, leading to treatment failure or toxicity.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Emergence of antimicrobial resistance to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the intensive care unit: association with the duration of antibiotic exposure and mode of administration

open access: yesAnnals of Intensive Care, 2017
Background Antibiotics are frequently used in intensive care units (ICUs), and their use is associated with the emergence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Clinical and cost-effectiveness of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion for diabetes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Objectives: To assess the clinical and cost-effectiveness of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) compared with multiple daily injections (MDI) in the delivery of intensive insulin therapy for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Unlocking potentials: the impact of meropenem, meropenem-vaborbactam, and ceftazidime-avibactam in combating carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae

open access: yesAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CREs) are recognized as an urgent public threat by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This study assesses the activity of humanized serum concentrations for meropenem (2 g Q8h), meropenem-vaborbactam (4
