Varied numbers of electroshock administrations followed by equal numbers of CS-UCS paired presentations were given to 7 groups of male albino rats to study desensitization and fear conditioning. Conditioned fear R, measured by the obstruction apparatus, was weaker in rats shocked prior to fear conditioning.

The conditions that promote fear learning: Prediction error and Pavlovian fear conditioning

A key insight of associative learning theory is that learning depends on the actions of prediction error: a discrepancy between the actual and expected outcomes of a conditioning trial. When positive, such error causes increments in associative strength and, when negative, such error causes decrements in associative strength.

A history of a brief trauma is reported to affect a risk for future PTSD development; however, little is known about the mechanisms by which a previous trauma exposure drives the sensitivity to a late-coming trauma.

Effects of dorsal striatum lesions in tone fear conditioning and contextual fear conditioning

It has been suggested that the striatum mediates hippocampus-independent memory tasks. Classical fear conditioning to a discrete stimulus such as a tone is not affected by hippocampal lesion, whereas contextual fear conditioning is an hippocampus dependent task.
