Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Conformal feature-selection wrappers for instance transfer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In this paper we propose a new method of conformal feature-selection wrappers for instance transfer (CFSWIT). Given target and source data, the method optimally selects features and source data that are relevant for a classification model.

Learning Face Pareidolia via Global Feature Transfer

open access: yesIEEE Access
Convolutional Neural Networks learn different details of features across various layers, progressively extracting features from low-level aspects such as edges to high-level semantic concepts.

Single-Sample Face Recognition Based on LPP Feature Transfer

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2016
Due to its wide applications in practice, face recognition has been an active research topic. With the availability of adequate training samples, many machine learning methods could yield high face recognition accuracy. However, under the circumstance of

Feature Discriminativity Estimation in CNNs for Transfer Learning

open access: yes, 2019
The purpose of feature extraction on convolutional neural networks is to reuse deep representations learnt for a pre-trained model to solve a new, potentially unrelated problem. However, raw feature extraction from all layers is unfeasible given the massive size of these networks.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A heat transfer model of the human upper limbs

open access: yes, 2012
A steady state multi-segmented heat transfer model of the human upper limbs was developed. The main purpose was to evaluate the impact of blood flow through superficial veins and subcutaneous vascular structures in the palm of the hands over the heat ...

Feature discrimination learning transfers to noisy displays in complex stimuli

open access: yesFrontiers in Cognition
IntroductionPerception under noisy conditions requires not only feature identification but also a process whereby target features are selected and noise is filtered out (e.g., when identifying an animal hiding in the savannah).

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.
