Reachability of nonlinear fed‐batch fermentation processes

International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control, 2002
AbstractThe reachability of a simple nonlinear fed‐batch fermentation process model is investigated in this paper. It is shown that the known difficulties of controlling such processes are primarily caused by the fact that the rank of the reachability distribution is always less than the number of state variables.Furthermore, a co‐ordinates ...

Fed-Batch Cultivation

2013
Fed-batch reactor is based on feeding of a growth limiting nutrient substrate to a culture. Cell growth and fermentation can be controlled by the feeding strategy. The fed-batch strategy is typically used to reach a high cell density in the bioreactor or mimic a continuous culture. Mostly the feed solution is highly concentrated.

Glycerol production by fermentation: A fed‐batch approach

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1987
In this investigation the bioconversion of glycerol from glucose was studied in a laboratory fermentor using an alkaline medium with a fed batch mode of carbon source addition yielding 30% glycerol concentration in the final broth. (Refs. 9).

Robust adaptive control of yeast fed-batch cultures

Computers & Chemical Engineering, 2008
Abstract Model-based control of bioprocesses is a difficult task due to the challenges associated with biological system modeling and the lack of on-line measurements. In this study, two robust controllers using minimal a priori process knowledge and minimal measurement information are designed to maximize biomass productivity in aerobic cultures ...

Fed-Batch Culture Processes

2020
The cells used in cell culture processes are all derived from animals. Their genetic and epigenetic control circuits and their physiology have evolved to carry out the physiological functions of the tissue from which they were derived, not to sustain themselves and proliferate in in vitro culture.

Fed-batch operation of stirred reactors

Chemical Engineering Science, 1987
Abstract Numerical algorithm for the computation of the dependence of periodic solutions on parameters in fed-batch or periodically operating reactors is described. Results for the simulation of a simple model of anaerobic digester and of a first order exothermic reaction are then discussed and various types of m -periodic solutions are presented ...

Optimization for a recombinantE. coli fed-batch fermentation

Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 1995
The operating strategy that produces the maximum foreign protein expression for a fed-batch process is desired. This is achieved by using a feasible quadratic programming (FSQP) algorithm with a structured model that describes cell growth and product formation for recombinant E. coli.

Fed-batch biotransformation of β-ionone by Aspergillus niger

Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 1995
Aspergillus niger IFO 8541 was found to be an efficient biocatalyst for the biotransformation of β-ionone into hydroxy and oxo derivatives. The reaction had to be carried out with an inoculum made of about 4 × 107 fresh spores/l and with a preliminary growth period giving at least 3 g/l biomass.

Optimal nonsingular control of fed‐batch fermentation

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1991
AbstractPresented is a new simple method for multidimensional optimization of fed‐batch fermentations based on the use of the orthogonal collocation technique. Considered is the problem of determination of optimal programs for fermentor temperature, substrate concentration in feed, feeding profile, and process duration.
