Fed-batch versus batch fermentation
Bioprocess Engineering, 1994This article concerns the comparison between batch and fed-batch fermentation based on productivity and including the analysis of the implications on product manufacturing cost.

Robust operation of fed batch fermenters
Bioprocess Engineering, 1998Optimisation of fed batch fermenters can substantially increase the profitability of these processes. Optimal control of a fed batch fermenter is usually based on a nominal process model. Parameter uncertainties are not taken into account. Simulation studies show that results obtained with fixed nominal model parameters can be quite sensitive to the ...

Glycerol production by fermentation: A fed‐batch approach
Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1987In this investigation the bioconversion of glycerol from glucose was studied in a laboratory fermentor using an alkaline medium with a fed batch mode of carbon source addition yielding 30% glycerol concentration in the final broth. (Refs. 9).

Microbial growth kinetics of fed-batch fermentations
Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 1988Fed-batch fermenters are generally operated with the addition of small doses of nutrients, therefore the volume of the fermentation broth increases with time. Batch fermenters generally contain and almost constant volume of broth and a logistic equation has been commonly employed to simulate microbial growth in them.

An adaptive control algorithm for fed‐batch culture
Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1984AbstractThe implementation of adaptive control for a fed‐batch culture in order to maximize the output of product based on a self‐adjusting model is discussed in the present work. Optimization methods were applied to the generalized mathematical model of a fed‐batch fermentation process to determine control algorithms that could be used for on‐line ...

Online optimization of a fed-batch bioreactor
Proceedings of the 1999 American Control Conference (Cat. No. 99CH36251), 1999The mathematical optimization of growth conditions of biochemical systems like bacterial and fungal systems in a bioreactor has been the focus of research for past many years. We propose a simple but working model of the process. The dynamic optimization of the process was carried out with adjustment of model parameters at each sampling time.

Optimization of Fed-batch Biotechnical Processes
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1992Abstract Linear-quadratic (LQ) optimal control theory is applied to the problem of optimizing the time-dependent process conditions affecting the fed-batch production of biomass. Two linear models are derived which are suitable for model-based optimization. Neither model assumes a particular time behaviour of the specific growth rate.

Optimization and control in fed-batch bioreactors
2005A method for obtaining maximum production of the bioproduct in fed-batch cultures is explained, and its validity is demonstrated by experimental data. The approach is based on a model which describes the relationship between the specific production rate, ϱ. and specific growth rate, μ.

A Fed-Batch Process for Pullulanase Production
1989An industrial mutant, Klebsiella planticola NRRC B5780, has been used in the development of a computer controlled fed-batch process for the production of pullulanase. A complex medium produced 33.3 Pu.cm−3. A simple medium containing glucose as the carbon source was shown to be suitable for production of the enzyme.
