Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Probiotic Candidate Strains Isolated during Fermentation of Agave (Agave angustifolia Haw)

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2021
Agave species are a source of diverse products for human use, such as food, fiber, and beverages, which include mezcal, a distilled beverage produced by spontaneous fermentation.

Intermittent fasting modulates the intestinal microbiota and improves obesity and host energy metabolism

open access: yesnpj Biofilms and Microbiomes, 2023
Intermittent fasting (IF) is a promising paradigm for weight loss which has been shown to modulate the gut microbiota based on 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing.

A gender-sensitised weight loss and healthy living programme for overweight and obese men delivered by Scottish Premier League football clubs (FFIT):a pragmatic randomised controlled trial [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background: The prevalence of male obesity is increasing but few men take part in weight loss programmes. We assessed the effect of a weight loss and healthy living programme on weight loss in football (soccer) fans.

Fermented Total Mixed Ration with Cottonseed Meal or Rapeseed Meal Improved Growth Performance and Meat Quality of Hu Lamb Compared to Total Mixed Ration with Soybean Meal

open access: yesFermentation, 2022
Protein sources in livestock feed include cottonseed meals (CSM) or rapeseed meals (RSM). However, their use in feed diets is restricted due to anti-nutritional elements such as free gossypol or glucosinolate.

Exploring the Potential Lipid-Lowering and Weight-Reducing Mechanisms of FH06 Fermented Beverages Based on Non-Targeted Metabolomics and Network Pharmacology

open access: yesFermentation
Investigating the intricate pathways through which FH06 fermentation broth exerts lipid-lowering and weight-loss effects is pivotal for advancing our comprehension of metabolic regulation and therapeutic interventions.

Effect of Optimized Chitosan Coating Obtained by Lactic Fermentation Chemical Treatment of Shrimp Waste on the Post-Harvest Behavior of Fresh-Cut Papaya (Carica papaya L.)

open access: yesFermentation, 2023
Chitosan is a biopolymer obtained from shrimp waste mainly by a polluting chemical method. In this work, a less polluting biological-chemical method to obtain chitosan from this waste has been optimized; this method used a successive lactic fermentation ...

A Review of Sensors for the Monitoring, Modeling, and Control of Commercial Wine Fermentations

open access: yesFermentation
Large-scale commercial wine fermentation requires the monitoring and control of multiple variables to achieve optimal results. Challenges in measurement arise from turbidity, stratification in large unmixed volumes, the presence of grape skins and solids

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.
