Farmed Fish Feeds: Use of Non-Conventional Feed as Fishmeal Replacement in Nigeria

open access: yesJournal of Applied Sciences and Environmental Management, 2023
Fish feeds are an integral part of commercial and personal aquaculture, which provides a balanced diet and nutrition for farmed fish. High cost and competition with human food of fish feed is a major concern amongst the livestock and aquaculture feed industries.

Towards Sustainable Aquafeeds: Microalgal (Nannochloropsis sp. QH25) Co-Product Biomass Can Fully Replace Fishmeal in the Feeds for Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

open access: yesFoods
Aquaculture, one of the world’s most rapidly growing food sectors, faces several concerns about its sustainability. A major concern is using fishmeal and fish oil from ocean-derived small pelagic fish (sardine, anchovy, etc.) in aquaculture feed.

Similarities Between the Lipid Profiles of Skin and Liver of European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Fed Diets With Different Lipid Content

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The fatty acid composition of fish is influenced by species, age, diet, and tissues, which respond differently to dietary lipids. This study examined how two commercial diets with contrasting polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) profiles, affecting eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), alter the fatty acid composition in ...

Fermented Golden Apple Snails as an Alternative Protein Source in Sex-Reversed Red Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus x O. mossambicus) Diets

open access: yesWalailak Journal of Science and Technology, 2013
The main purpose of this study is to find out the possibility of using fermented golden apple snail (FGAS) as an alternative protein source in sex-reversed red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus x O. mosambicus) diets.

Global Poultry Feed Protein Sources: Trends, Challenges, and Sustainability Perspectives Using FAOSTAT Data

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The global poultry industry is one of the fastest‐growing livestock sectors, with worldwide chicken stocks exceeding 32 billion heads and meat production surpassing 144 million tonnes in 2024 (FAOSTAT, 2026). Conventional protein sources, particularly soybean meal (SBM) and fishmeal, underpin most commercial poultry diets but face mounting ...

Effects Of Replacing Dietary Fishmeal With Maggots On Performance And Nutrient Retention Of Laying Hens

open access: yesNigerian Journal of Animal Production, 2021
Laying hens (53 weeks old) were fed a basal diet with 9% fish meal and diets in which housefly maggots (Musca domestica, Linn) replaced 33.3, 66.7 and 100% of the fish meal in the basal diet during a 6-week trial period.  Average daily feed intake were 125.1, 115.1, 109.1 and 105.7g respectively (P<0.05).

Suitable Substrates for Black Soldier Fly Larvae Production: A Pathway Towards Sustainable Aquafeed Production

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 6, Issue 5, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Due to the rapid growth in aquaculture, there is an urgent need to explore alternative sustainable sources for fish feed other than conventional fishmeal. Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) have been identified as a potential source of protein that could transform waste materials into high‐value biomass. This review critically synthesizes current
