Extended Inclusive Fitness Theory bridges Economics and Biology through a common understanding of Social Synergy

open access: yes, 2015
Inclusive Fitness Theory (IFT) was proposed half a century ago by W.D. Hamilton to explain the emergence and maintenance of cooperation between individuals that allows the existence of society. Contemporary evolutionary ecology identified several factors

Ecological theatre and the evolutionary game: how environmental and demographic factors determine payoffs in evolutionary games [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In the standard approach to evolutionary games and replicator dynamics, differences in fitness can be interpreted as an excess from the mean Malthusian growth rate in the population.

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Fitness of Venturia inaequalis isolates with resistance to multiple chemical classes of fungicides in vitro

open access: yesSiberian Journal of Life Sciences and Agriculture
Background. The development of fungicide resistance in the apple scab pathogen suggests the development of measures to manage the development of resistance that can functionally delay the emergence of resistant populations of the pathogen.

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...

Longitudinal circulating tumor DNA profiling in patients with advanced endometrial cancer using an off‐the‐shelf targeted NGS panel

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Intratumour heterogeneity complicates precision management of advanced endometrial cancer. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) offers a minimally invasive strategy to capture tumor evolution and therapeutic resistance. Here, we compare tumor‐agnostic NGS with tumor‐informed ddPCR, outlining their relative sensitivity, concordance, and clinical implications ...

CRISPR-enabled investigation of fitness costs associated with the E198A mutation in β-tubulin of Colletotrichum siamense

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2023
IntroductionUnderstanding fitness costs associated with fungicide resistance is critical to improve resistance management strategies. E198A in b-tubulin confers resistance to the fungicide thiophanate-methyl and has been widely reported in several plant ...

Fitness Costs of Fluoroquinolone Resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae [PDF]

open access: yesAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 2007
ABSTRACT The fitness cost of the genes responsible for resistance to fluoroquinolones in clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae were estimated in vitro in a common genetic background. Naturally occurring parC ,

The effect of toxic Microcystis aeruginosa on four different populations of Daphnia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Cyanobacteria reduce the fitness of many Daphnia species, and blooms in eutrophic lakes may place strong selective pressure upon these primary consumers.
