Effects of 8-week of fitness classes on blood pressure, body composition, and physical fitness

open access: yes, 2020
BACKGROUND: Fitness activities such as indoor cycling (IC), Zumba® (ZU) and body pump (BP) are practiced by large segments of population. There are no studies showing which kind of fitness activity can produce more health benefits.

Evidence for an ecological cost of enhanced herbicide metabolism in Lolium rigidum [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
1. In some cases, evaluation of resource competitive interactions between herbicide resistant vs. susceptible weed ecotypes provides evidence for the expression of fitness costs associated with evolved herbicide-resistant gene traits. Such fitness costs

Diapause, cold hardiness and flight ability of Cry1Ac-resistant and -susceptible strains of Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2007
The diapause inducement condition, cold hardiness, and flight ability in Cry1Ac-resistant (BtR) and Cry1Ac-susceptible (96S) strains of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) were compared in the laboratory.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Insecticide Resistance Evolution Negatively Affects the Fitness of Aphis gossypii Glover During Selection on Cotton Plants Under Laboratory Conditions

open access: yesPlants
The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, is among the most economically significant sap-sucking insect pests, inflicting substantial economic losses worldwide. Insecticides such as thiamethoxam, bifenthrin, and flonicamid are commonly used to manage this
