Bite force estimates and morphological correlations of jaw muscles in parrots

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Parrots (Order: Psittaciformes) are renowned for their high bite force (BF) and morphological correlates thereof, including a highly mobile skull and two unique mandibular adductor muscles—m. pseudomasseter and m. ethmomandibularis, with the former being hypothesized to increase force output.

The gift remembered: The Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) Anatomical Donor Stewardship's ethical and practical handbook for anatomy donor tributes

open access: yesAnatomical Sciences Education, EarlyView.
Abstract Providing students with a way to honor human body donors during or after an anatomy course has been shown to help provide a sense of closure and comfort to students and, when present, donor families. Gestures of gratitude for donors can also emphasize humanistic values of respect, empathy, and professionalism.

The coloration toolkit of flowers

open access: yes, 2015
The plant kingdom offers a bewildering variety of flower colors. In my thesis, I investigate the mechanisms and functions of flower coloration. Via a newly developed optical model I show how changes in floral anatomy, e.g. concentration and localisation of pigment as well as thickness of the flower, influence the visual signal of flowers.
