Podocyte injury in focal segmental glomerulosclerosis: Lessons from animal models (a play in five acts)

open access: yesKidney International, 2008
Genetic engineering in the mouse has ushered in a new era of disease modeling that has advanced our understanding of podocyte injury in the pathogenesis of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.

Focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis

Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences, 2006
An increasing cause of end-stage renal disease is the pathological lesion focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). FSGS is characterized by proteinuria and frequently nephrotic syndrome with ensuing renal failure. The etiology remains unknown in the majority of individuals.

A Case of Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis

Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, 2021
An 18-year-old man was referred to nephrology after being found to have proteinuria by urine dipstick during routine evaluation. He reported a significant family history of kidney disease. His father, a paternal aunt, and male paternal first cousin all developed kidney failure at ages 20, 25, and ...

Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis

Nihon rinsho. Japanese journal of clinical medicine, 2004
Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is one of the major causes of nephrotic syndrome in adult as well as in the children. Untreated or steroid-resistant primary FSGS often shows a progressive renal insufficiency and reaches to end-stage renal failure.

Treatment of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis

Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, 2001
The prognosis of untreated patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis is poor, as the disease progress to end-stage renal disease in approximately 50--70% of nephrotic patients. Although focal segmental glomerulosclerosis was initially considered to be a steroid-resistant disease, several studies have shown a better responsiveness to more ...

Familial focal segmental glomerulosclerosis

Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, 2001
There is increasing recognition of the importance of genetic factors in the development of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and related proteinuric disorders. Recently, four genes have been identified which, when defective, cause focal segmental glomerulosclerosis or nephrosis.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in children

Current Opinion in Pediatrics, 1995
Idiopathic focal segmental glomerulosclerosis is a histologic diagnosis that usually presents as the nephrotic syndrome but, unlike minimal change disease, often leads to renal failure in children. Standard therapies used to treat the proteinuria are often futile, and thus patients are at risk for the multiple complications resulting from persistent ...

Focal and Segmental Glomerulosclerosis

open access: yes
NLM images of a patient with focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis were acquired every 4 μm in depth. Images spaced 12 μm apart in depth show a segmental obliteration of the glomerular tuft with sclerosis (blue arrow), adhesions and obliteration of the ...

Treatment of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis

Expert Opinion on Pharmacotherapy, 2005
Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is not a disease, but a lesion affecting the podocyte. Secondary FSGS may be due to a host of various factors, and patients are rarely nephrotic, requiring symptomatic treatment only. The best prognostic feature of nephrotic FSGS is its response to corticosteroids.

Problems with 'focal segmental glomerulosclerosis'

Pediatric Nephrology, 2011
The term 'focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)' has been applied to many different conditions. All classifications of 'FSGS', including those describing 'variants', perpetuate the misconceptions that the entities included have something in common and that the term 'FSGS' has some value.
