Periodic Folding of Thin Sheets
SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 1995Summary: When a thin sheet of a flexible material such as paper is fed from a horizontal spool towards a rough horizontal plane below it, the sheet folds on itself in a regular manner. We model this phenomenon as a free boundary problem for a nonlinear elastic sheet, taking into account the stiffness and weight of the sheet, and the height of the spool

Periodic folding of a falling viscoelastic sheet
Physical Review E, 2020A viscoelastic solid sheet fed from a certain height towards a rigid horizontal plane folds on itself provided that there is no slip. This phenomenon commonly occurs in the manufacturing process of textile and paper products. In this paper we apply a particle dynamics model to investigate this phenomenon.

Focused ion beams (FIBs) are versatile tools with cross-disciplinary applications from the physical and life sciences to archeology. Nevertheless, the nanoscale patterning precision of FIBs is often accompanied by defect formation and sample deformation.

Current Opinion in Structural Biology, 1995
Abstract In the past year, interesting new information concerning various aspects of the folding process of β-sheet proteins has been gleaned. Kinetic and equilibrium folding intermediates have been characterized. Studies of extensively denatured states and of model peptide fragments have enabled important steps to be taken towards an understanding ...

Scaling properties of randomly folded plastic sheets
Physical Review E, 2007We study the scaling properties of randomly folded aluminum sheets of different thicknesses h and widths L . We found that the fractal dimension D=2.30+/-0.01 and the force scaling exponent delta=0.21+/-0.02 are independent of the sheet thickness and close to those obtained in numerical simulations with a coarse-grained model of triangulated self ...

Kinetic studies of β-sheet protein folding
Current Opinion in Structural Biology, 1998New studies have shown that folding of beta-sheet proteins can occur with and without intermediates, with fast to slow refolding rates and late to very late transition states. These experiments demonstrate that, despite early speculation to the contrary, beta-sheet protein folding does not appear to be fundamentally different from that of helical and ...

β-Sheet folding mechanisms from perturbation energetics
Current Opinion in Structural Biology, 2006Amide backbone and sidechain mutagenesis data can be used in combination with kinetic and thermodynamic measurements to understand the energetic contributions of backbone hydrogen bonding and the hydrophobic effect to the acquisition of beta-sheet structure.
