Two new species of the genus Scincella Mittleman, 1950 (Squamata, Scincidae) from southwestern China [PDF]

open access: yesZoosystematics and Evolution
The genus Scincella Mittleman, 1950 of the family Scincidae is a species-rich group currently comprising 51 recognized species. In this study, we describe two new species of Scincella from southwestern Sichuan, China: Scincella jinchuanensis sp. nov. and

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Effects of Mulch and Fertilization on the Quantity and Quality of Perennial Wall–Rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia)

open access: yesPlants
Diplotaxis tenuifolia, a species with high nutritional value, was recently introduced in Romania, making in-depth research necessary to develop an efficient cultivation technology to increase agronomic and economic potential. Therefore, the present study

Evaluation of dietary diversity scores for assessment of micronutrient intake and food security in developing countries

open access: yes, 2009
Micronutrient malnutrition and food insecurity are widespread global public health problems. Micronutrient deficiencies affect one-third of the global population.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

The diversity of food poisoning and sources of contamination

open access: yesEurosurveillance, 1999
The three entirely different forms of food poisoning described in this issue of Eurosurveillance illustrate the extraordinary propensity of the organisms to survive and cause illness.

Dietary diversity and food intake of urban preschool children in North‐Western Sri Lanka

open access: yes, 2020
Childhood malnutrition, associated with poor diet, is a clear public health threat in Sri Lanka, with high rates of under-nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies coupled with the growing risk of overweight/obesity in urban locations. This study explored

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...
