Risks of new pests and diseases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Climate change will affect the social and environmental determinants of the health of human, animal and plant populations around the world. It will challenge the social and biological capacities of food systems to regulate the emergence of pests and ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Consumer Research Needs from the Food and Drug Administration on Front-of-Package Nutritional Labeling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Americans have increasingly busy lifestyles and desire quick and nutritious food choices. To provide consumers with at-a-glance nutrition information, many food manufacturers have introduced front-of-package (FOP) nutritional labeling systems.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Conclusions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
One of the basic problems in local organic food systems seems to be connected to food chains. The range of creative initiatives covers all thinkable fields: information about ecology, farmers' own activities in creating brands and labels, associations ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Analysis of geographic location and pathways for influenza A virus infection of commercial upland game bird and conventional poultry farms in the United States of America

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research, 2019
Background Avian influenza (AI) is an infectious viral disease that affects several species and has zoonotic potential. Due to its associated health and economic repercussions, minimizing AI outbreaks is important.

Discussion - cooperation in local organic food systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
What is needed for local food systems to emerge? First, time. Second, active people are needed. In order to be sustainable local and ecological food chains need to be, at least to some extent, economically ...

“They Collected What Was Left of the Scraps”: Food Surplus as an Opportunity and Its Legal Incentives [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
For many years the problem of food security has been addressed only in relation to developing countries, due to the fact that people in developed nations had a relatively abundant supply of food.
