Effect of Ground Motion Duration and Frequency Characteristics on the Probabilistic Risk Assessment of a Concrete Gravity Dam

open access: yesInfrastructures
Evaluation of seismic risk by capturing the influences of strong motion duration and frequency contents of ground motion through probabilistic approaches is the main element of this study.

Fragility analysis of underground large-scale frame structures considering seismic effects of vertical earthquakes

open access: yesYantu gongcheng xuebao, 2023
The increase dynamic analysis (IDA) curves of seismic responses of the underground large-scale frame structure (ULSFS) are investigated during the single horizontal earthquakes and horizontal-vertical earthquakes, respectively. The influence mechanism of

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Seismic Fragility Assessment of Steel SMRF Structures under Various Types of Near and Far Fault Ground Motions [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Rehabilitation in Civil Engineering, 2019
In this paper, the seismic collapse probability of special steel moment-resisting frame (SSMRF) structures, designed to 4th edition of Iranian seismic design code, under near fault pulse-like and far fault ordinary ground motions is evaluated through ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

The Fragility of Sensitivity Analysis: An Encompassing Perspective* [PDF]

open access: yesOxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, 2008
AbstractRobustness and fragility in Leamer's sense are defined with respect to a particular coefficient over a class of models. This paper shows that inclusion of the data generation process in that class of models is neither necessary nor sufficient for robustness.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Methodical Investigations on Seismic Retrofitting of Steel Plate Shear Wall Systems

open access: yesBuildings
An efficient retrofitting technique is expected to improve the seismic performance of a lateral force-resisting system without increasing the seismic demand on the structure, which can unfavorably lead to irreparable damages during a seismic event.
