Functional comparison of EncB and EncC cargo proteins in iron storage within the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

Frailty index and its role in emergency surgery of acute abdominal diseases in elderly patients

open access: yesЯкутский медицинский журнал
The study involved patients over the age of 62 years with acute diseases of the abdominal cavity, who underwent surgical treatment. The patients were divided into two groups based on the Edmonton fragility index.

How States Become Fragile: Relevancy of State Fragility and Climate Change

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2018
The objective of this article is to develop a main index that is capable of determining a state, s fragility and simultaneously measuring the impact of climate change.

‘Guide and Prejudice’— How Argonautes recognize targets across domains of life

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Argonaute proteins use short nucleic‐acid guides to locate and regulate specific targets across all domains of life. Despite striking diversity—from human gene silencing to bacterial immune defence—all Argonautes share a conserved three‐stage recognition logic: guide‐directed sampling, progressive target pairing with a conformational checkpoint and ...

From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

Chiral separation of chloroalkanes with the chromatographic column onboard Martian rovers

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Computer image of the Rosalind Franklin Rover of ESA's ExoMars mission. ExoMars is scheduled to land on planet Mars in Oxia Planum in 2029. This area represents an interesting spot to look for biosignatures. Investigations of ExoMars include measurement on molecular chirality. We show that chiral chloroalkanes, that have been identified on Mars, can be

Multidimensional Seismic Fragility Study of Intake Towers Based on Incremental Dynamic Analysis

open access: yesBuildings
Assessing the fragility of intake towers using a single damage index does not allow for accurate evaluation of the potential for structural damage under seismic conditions.

The statistical significance of meta-analyses is frequently fragile: definition of a fragility index for meta-analyses.

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Epidemiology, 2019
OBJECTIVES Meta-analyses inform clinical practice by summarizing treatment effect estimates based on results from several trials. However, the statistical significance of a meta-analysis (i.e., whether the pooled treatment effect is statistically ...

L‐aspartate oxidase provides new insights into fumarate reduction in anaerobic darkness in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

SENSITIVITY AND FRAGILITY IN KERATOCONUS

open access: yes, 1983
38 persons with various degrees of keratoconus were examined. Using the photokeratoscope an index of the severity of the cone was established and compared to a group of normal eyes. Sensitivity was measured in the centre and periphery of the cornea.
