Membrane composition and thermodynamic identity as boundaries of life for synthetic cell research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
What makes a cell a cell? The boundary of a living cell is not just a wall. Read as a Markov blanket, the membrane separates internal from external states, generating identity and non‐equilibrium order. Can this identity be rebuilt from scratch in a synthetic cell?

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Isoflavone content and antioxidant properties of soybean seeds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The isoflavone content and antioxidant properties of five Croatian soybean seed cultivars from two locations were analysed. The content of total and individual isofavones was determined by high performance liquid chromatography.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

EVALUATION OF FREE RADICAL SCAVENGING ACTIVITY OF MIMOSA PUDICA THORNS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Objective: Mimosa pudica is a traditional medicinal plant. The natural antioxidant compounds from plants mop up the free radicals causing cell damage and maintain the biological systems.

Optimization of the Fermentation Process of Mulberry Juice by Lactic Acid Bacteria and Changes in Functional Components and Antioxidant Activity during Fermentation

open access: yesShipin gongye ke-ji, 2023
Using mulberry as raw material, single and mixed strains of Lactobacillus plantarum and Bifidobacterium longum were used to ferment mulberry juice, and single-factor and response surface tests were used to investigate the optimal fermentation process of ...

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

Free-radical Scavenging Activity of Some European Boletales

open access: yesNatural Product Communications, 2009
The ethanol extracts of 47 mushroom species from the order Boletales were tested for their free radical scavenging activities by means of the DPPH free-radical scavenging and hydrogen peroxide-induced luminol chemiluminescence assays. In the DPPH radical
