Sugar intake among German adolescents: trends from 1990-2016 based on biomarker excretion in 24-h urine samples [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Trend analyses based on dietary records suggest decreases in the intakes of total (TS), added (AS) and free sugar (FS) since 2005 among children and adolescents in Germany. In terms of age trends, TS intake decreased with increasing age.

Metformin reduces liver glucose production by inhibition of fructose-1-6-bisphosphatase

open access: yesNature Network Boston, 2018
Metformin is a first-line drug for the treatment of individuals with type 2 diabetes, yet its precise mechanism of action remains unclear. Metformin exerts its antihyperglycemic action primarily through lowering hepatic glucose production (HGP).

Exercise performed immediately after fructose ingestion enhances fructose oxidation and suppresses fructose storage [PDF]

open access: yesThe American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2016
Exercise prevents the adverse effects of a high-fructose diet through mechanisms that remain unknown. We assessed the hypothesis that exercise prevents fructose-induced increases in very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) triglycerides by decreasing the fructose conversion into glucose and VLDL-triglyceride and fructose carbon storage into hepatic glycogen ...

Construction of hyperthermostable d‐allulose 3‐epimerase from Arthrobacter globiformis M30 using the sequence information from Arthrobacter psychrolactophilus

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
d‐Allulose can be produced from d‐fructose by d‐allulose 3‐epimerase. Based on sequence homology information, we successfully engineered thermostable mutants with the protein engineering method. By integrating positive mutations, we constructed an enzyme that exhibits hyperthermostability without a loss in the activity.

Fructose overconsumption impairs hepatic manganese homeostasis and ammonia disposal

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
Arginase, a manganese (Mn)-dependent enzyme, is indispensable for urea generation and ammonia disposal in the liver. The potential role of fructose in Mn and ammonia metabolism is undefined.

Fructose Promotes Leaky Gut, Endotoxemia, and Liver Fibrosis Through Ethanol‐Inducible Cytochrome P450‐2E1–Mediated Oxidative and Nitrative Stress

open access: yesHepatology, 2019
Fructose intake is known to induce obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aimed to evaluate the effects of fructose drinking on gut leakiness, endotoxemia, and NAFLD and study the underlying ...

GLUT5-mediated fructose utilization drives lung cancer growth by stimulating fatty acid synthesis and AMPK/mTORC1 signaling.

open access: yesJCI Insight, 2020
Lung cancer (LC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Its rapid growth requires hyperactive catabolism of principal metabolic fuels. It is unclear whether fructose, an abundant sugar in current diets, is essential for LC.

Using a Supramolecular Approach to Engineer Modular Hydrogel Platforms for Culturing Protoplasts – from General Tissue Engineering to Cellular Agriculture

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
Using supramolecular monomers, various hydrogel culture systems were formulated to culture protoplasts; including 2D, 2.5D, and 3D hydrogels. Depending on the culture platform, bioactive functionalization led to protoplast enlargement (2D and 2.5D) or plasmolysis (3D). This work shows the potential to modularly engineer synthetic platforms for cellular

Three months of high-fructose feeding fails to induce excessive weight gain or leptin resistance in mice. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
High-fructose diets have been implicated in obesity via impairment of leptin signaling in humans and rodents. We investigated whether fructose-induced leptin resistance in mice could be used to study the metabolic consequences of fructose consumption in ...
