Since the 2010 IAEA-FEC Conference, FTU has exploited improvements in cleaning procedures and in the density control system to complete a systematic exploration of access to high-density conditions in a wide range of plasma currents and magnetic fields.

Plasma modeling for position and current control in FTU
Fusion Engineering and Design, 2003This paper describes the development and experimental validation of a simulation model for the design of FTU plasma radial position and current controllers. These controllers have been designed to be tested experimentally on the FTU tokamak. The results predicted in simulation were actually delivered during FTU operation, in two different discharges.

An overview of the Frascati tokamak upgrade (FTU) results during the period 2000-2002 is presented. Long duration internal transport barriers (ITBs) have been obtained on FTU with combined injection of lower hybrid (LH) and electron cyclotron (EC) waves in 5 T/0.5 MA discharges. The ITB phase lasts about 10 energy confinement times and is characterized

The design of diagnostics for the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (FTU) is challenging because of the compactness of the machine (8-cm-wide ports) and the low operating temperatures requiring the presence of a cryostat. Nevertheless, a rather complete diagnostic system has been progressively installed.

New FTU ohmic discharges with a liquid lithium limiter at I P = 0.7–0.75 MA, B T = 7 T and n e0 ⩾ 5 × 1020 m−3 confirm the spontaneous transition to an enhanced confinement regime, 1.3–1.4 times ITER-97-L, when the density peaking factor is above a threshold value of 1.7–1.8.

Overview of the FTU Results [PDF]
Experiments on runaway electrons have been performed for the determination of the critical electric field for runaways generation. A large database of post-disruption generated runaway beams has been analysed in order to identify linear dynamical models for new position and current runaway beam controllers, and experiments of Electron Cyclotron ...

A modification of the FTU tokamak (toroidal field BT = 8T, plasma current IP = 1.6MA, minor radius a = 0.3m, major radius R = 0.93m) is proposed in order to extend the FTU operation to strongly shaped plasmas (FTU-D: R = 1m, a = 0.18 - 0.2m, elongation = 1.6, triangularity up to = 0.8). FTU has a circular vacuum vessel and was built to produce circular

Magnetohydrodynamic studies in the FTU
2004The main magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activities affecting the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (FTU) high-field plasmas with limiter configuration are sawtooth relaxations and tearing modes. The period of sawtooth relaxations can be increased in FTU both by electron heating and by pellet particle deposition near the sawtooth inversion radius; both methods lead ...

The MHD control system for the FTU tokamak
2010 17th IEEE-NPSS Real Time Conference, 2010In this paper the architecture of the MHD control system for the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (FTU) is presented. This control is aimed to stabilize tearing modes (TM) in the plasma by EC heating and current drive. TMs are detected and spatially localized by correlating several ECE channels and Mirnov coil signals; two independent antennas are steered in ...
