Difficulties in fumonisin determination: the issue of hidden fumonisins
Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, 2009In this paper, the results obtained by five independent methods for the quantification of fumonisins B(1), B(2), and B(3) in raw maize are reported. Five naturally contaminated maize samples and a reference material were analyzed in three different laboratories.

Determination of fumonisins in milk
Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part B, 1994Fumonisin B1 (FB1) and fumonisin B2 (FB2) were determined in milk by liquid chromatography (LC) following immunoaffinity column cleanup. Recoveries from milk spiked with 5-50 ng each fumonisin/ml averaged 79-109%. The aminopentol hydrolysis product of FB1 (AP1) was determined by LC after cleanup on a C18 solid phase phase extraction column; mean ...

Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon is a common fungal contaminant of corn and produces a variety of mycotoxins. Among these are the recently discovered fumonisins, which are now known to cause certain animal diseases, namely leukoencephalomalacia in horses and pulmonary edema in swine.

Analysis of heat-processed corn foods for fumonisins and bound fumonisins
Food Additives and Contaminants, 2004Thirty retail samples of heat-processed corn foods, i.e. corn flakes, corn-based breakfast cereals, tortilla chips and corn chips, were analysed for fumonisins--fumonisin B1 (FB1), fumonisin B2 (FB2) and hydrolysed FB1 (HFB1)--as well as for protein- and total-bound FB1. Bound (hidden) fumonisins cannot be detected by conventional analysis.

Fumonisins are fungal toxins found in maize and maize-based foods. Fumonisins are toxic to animals but their impact on human health is uncertain. Epidemiological evidence suggests that fumonisins are potential risk factors for neural tube defects (NTDs) and for growth retardation of young children living in areas where large amounts of fumonisin ...

Fumonisins and fumonisin analogs as inhibitors of ceramide synthase and inducers of apoptosis
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular and Cell Biology of Lipids, 2002Sphingoid bases are growth inhibitory and pro-apoptotic for many types of cells when added to cells exogenously, and can be elevated to toxic amounts endogenously when cells are exposed to inhibitors of ceramide synthase. An important category of naturally occurring inhibitors are the fumonisins, which inhibit ceramide synthase through structural ...
