Differential N-terminal processing of beta and gamma actin

open access: yesiScience, 2022
Summary: Cytoplasmic beta- and gamma-actin are ubiquitously expressed in every eukaryotic cell. They are encoded by different genes, but their amino acid sequences differ only by four conservative substitutions at the N-termini, making it difficult to ...

Lack of evidence for a role of anthrax toxin receptors as surface receptors for collagen VI and for its cleaved-off C5 domain/endotrophin

open access: yesiScience, 2022
Summary: The microfibril-forming collagen VI is proteolytically cleaved and it was proposed that the released C-terminal Kunitz domain (C5) of the α3 chain is an adipokine important for tumor progression and fibrosis.

The Cellular and Physiological Basis for Lung Repair and Regeneration: Past, Present, and Future. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The respiratory system, which includes the trachea, airways, and distal alveoli, is a complex multi-cellular organ that intimately links with the cardiovascular system to accomplish gas exchange.

Mitotic HOOK3 phosphorylation by ERK1c drives microtubule-dependent Golgi destabilization and fragmentation

open access: yesiScience, 2021
Summary: ERK1c is an alternatively spliced isoform of ERK1 that specifically regulates mitotic Golgi fragmentation, which allows division of the Golgi during mitosis.

Dihydroceramide desaturase promotes the formation of intraluminal vesicles and inhibits autophagy to increase exosome production

open access: yesiScience, 2021
Summary: Exosomes are important for cell–cell communication. Deficiencies in the human dihydroceramide desaturase gene, DEGS1, increase the dihydroceramide-to-ceramide ratio and cause hypomyelinating leukodystrophy. However, the disease mechanism remains

Immune Function of Endothelial Cells: Evolutionary Aspects, Molecular Biology and Role in Atherogenesis

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2022
Atherosclerosis is one of the key problems of modern medicine, which is due to the high prevalence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases and their significant share in the structure of morbidity and mortality in many countries. Atherogenesis is a complex chain of events that proceeds over many years in the vascular wall with the participation of ...

IL11 stimulates ERK/P90RSK to inhibit LKB1/AMPK and activate mTOR initiating a mesenchymal program in stromal, epithelial, and cancer cells

open access: yesiScience, 2022
Summary: IL11 initiates fibroblast activation but also causes epithelial cell dysfunction. The mechanisms underlying these processes are not known. We report that IL11-stimulated ERK/P90RSK activity causes the phosphorylation of LKB1 at S325 and S428 ...

Human Merkel cells – aspects of cell biology, distribution and functions

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Cell Biology, 2005
Human Merkel cells were first described by Friedrich S. Merkel in 1875 and named "Tastzellen" (touch cells) assuming a sensory touch function within the skin. Only ultrastructural research revealed their characteristics such as dense-core granules, plasma membrane spines and dendrites as well as a loosely arranged cytoskeleton.

Evolutionary cell biology: Functional insight from “Endless forms most beautiful” [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In animal and fungal model organisms, the complexities of cell biology have been analyzed in exquisite detail and much is known about how these organisms function at the cellular level.

Glycemia Regulation: From Feedback Loops to Organizational Closure. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Endocrinologists apply the idea of feedback loops to explain how hormones regulate certain bodily functions such as glucose metabolism. In particular, feedback loops focus on the maintenance of the plasma concentrations of glucose within a narrow range ...
